OK, so one side has blown - looks like a festoon jobby.

Has anyone tried a replacement bulb along the likes of this? - instead of the 'normal' ones?

Nosh,

If you are going down this route, then for the ultimate effect, line the area behind the number plate (excluding bulb holder location) with "kitchen foil".

You will then have a well lit rear number plate

I have done exactly this, with the bulbs as postet above (plug&play). Plus, I have installed a reflecting aluminium sheet like this:

You can get those at your local toolstore... simply cut and bent in shape. This together with LED works very well for a bright rear!

I installed these LED bulbs in my Griff as there was nothing covering the bulb inside the boot in the early Griffs.
So its possible for things in the boot to be burnt by the hot bulb when you have a full boot. I was lucky, it just burned my tent bag before I spotted it, rather than the tent

I didn't want to just cover the bulbs though as they produce a useful light in the boot.

The LED ones are directional, so I have to roll them around to give me light in the boot now, but they don't get hot so it was a no brainer for me.
They produce a more direct beam of light, like a couple of little torches, on the plate rather than an overall glow, but if you position them right they are fine.

Gents,

Bulbs on order...

Apologies for the quality of the pic, but do you try and aim the bulb towards the boot(i.e. red arrow) or str8 up (blue)?

One last question, did you put the foil stuff on 1, 2 and 3? Or just on one 'side' (ie. 2) if you get my meaning?

Here is my 'Tony Hart on steroids' impression...

Thanks in advance

As for the reflector metal I have bent it to a curve to get the best possible reflections. Just try different angles when you have your bulbs in place, before mounting the number plate. You can see the result quite well in a dark garage.

Will look different to my solution in the end, as the Cerbera lights shine upside down.

So I have installed the LED bulbs bought here and tested the curved metal sheet I had bought - trouble was, it would create different patterns behind the number plate and various shaping just created some really wierd light effects and we couldn't get an overall constant 'glow'...

So, I remembered a post about kitchen foil and tried the left overs of the Crimble Turkey baco foil...

Turned on the lights and the effect was absolutley awesome...completely uniform luminence behind the plate that created the effect I wanted...

....just finished the job this morning...

Used up all the foil and stuck it on with auto spray adhesive....

If you have a Mk1 Chim with back lit plates, then foil and LED bulbs is a great way to go.

Hi all
Has any one done this to a cerb as I'm thinking of doing this to mine
But looking at the pic of the chim
I don't see how the plate is held on
Is there a backing plate/mount that goes on first
Then the plate fixes to that as I wouldn't whant lite
Leeking from around the edges
The end resault looks stunning all help greatly resived

This only really works for early Chinareas, later cars and all Cerberas had an angled rear plate with the lights above it.
Early Chimaeras had a back lit plate that is flush with the body and lit from behind. wink

Didn't realize being legal was such a important issue for you what with that front plate biggrin

If you look closely at the Chim pictures it looks like there are a couple tags at either side of the number plate that would allow you to screw through the plate.

Personally I like the effect of the plate sitting there with no apparent fixing so mine is held on by strips of double sided number plate tape that was cut into thin strips and put all the way round the edge of the recess. Been there for over 6 years now without leaks or even remotely looking like falling off.

Another top job from Nosh clap

The plate not only looks better, but with our rear lights so dim anything that can make the rear of the car easier for other road users to see is going to make it safer too.

prompted by this post I had a look at my numberplate last night after returning from classic night at the Ace.

Turns out one of my bulbs was out and the remaining one was feeble, the effect looked patchy, uneven and very dim.

I've gone for some chrome sticky back plastic and two SV8 10w incandescent Festoon bulbs.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200739883924?var=5000538...

I believe the standard bulbs are 5w so the 10w bulbs should be double the light, with the chrome sticky back plastic I'm hoping for a nice bright result scratchchin

It's going to be like Blue Peter round my place soon biggrin
