Just wondering if any of you in SA have reliable inside information as to what Uganda is like to visit these days. My son, who is at University has just announced he thinks he might volunteer to teach English out there over summer break (!)so I thought I'd try & get some down to earth views on safety, health, travel issues etc. Be grateful if any of you in the Dark Continent might offer opinions. Mr Bass p'raps ? (personally I'd far rather he got some sort of job to try & earn some dosh back home, but..well.. Students )

My cousin worked out there for a while. I don't know details, but he was very glad when his contract ended.
The very idea that "health and safety" exists is probably a very foreign concept to the locals.

Thanks- I guess a non existent approach to H & S is a foregone conclusion anywhere in rural Africa. It wouldn't bother me here but more of a problem there than here particularly.

If there's any way you can talk him out of it, I suggest you do.
The risk and reward ratio would not, IMO, be worth it. Especially not if he's doing something like teaching.
My cousin was in engineering and being paid a fortune for what he was doing, but even he said he wouldn't do it again if he knew then what he knows now.

Thanks again for your comments. Son has apparently decided to "postpone" the idea ! Allegedly till next year but hopefully permanently. I think he may be trying to bow out slowly without losing face against parental advice
