When I was a kid [retro rose tinted analysis coming up] I used to love programs such as Equinox, Tomorrow's World, and The Great Egg Race. I found them inspirational, funny, and a great way to learn. Same with Johnny Ball and David Bellamy (ignoring their current rants for the moment), very engaging presenters and very educational.

Is there anything out there today that can match these programs for educational and entertainment content, especially for kids? For some reason program makers seem to think that science programs have to be more entertainment and joking around than anything else, but when I was young I would gladly sit and listen, I found it fascinating. I didn't need Dick & Dom (or whoever) to spice it up.

My son seems very much in the same mindset as me, I would love for him to be able to see something similar as he's growing up.

Deadly 60 - Steve Backshall is a great host and pitches it just right so kids/adults can both enjoy.

Spring/Autumwatch - Now they've got rid of Oddie it's much better. Packham is very dry but knowledgeable.

Still thinking...

Bang Goes The Theory sounds really good, thanks for the suggestion. What age group would you say it was aimed at?

How about James May's man lab? A nice mix of blokey stuff and jokey crap, and there is a small chance you might learn how to do something useful/ build stuff.

It's not aimed particularly at any age group - but it keeps everything at a light hearted, fun level so kids should find it enjoyable and educating.

The Sky at Night is still on once a month and is shown around 7.00pm mid week on BBC 4 (as well as at its traditional 12.00 midnightish slot on BBC1 on Sundays).
The Stargazing Live show that was broadcast in January over 3 days was very good for kids too.

How It's Made, Mythbusters, Deadly 60 (and Deadly 360), Planet Dinosaur Files are all very good.

Blast Lab and Nina and the Neurons for younger kids?

My kids love horrible histories, which is excellent, Vic reeves latest show - the ministry of curious things has it's moments, The other day they were watching a show with Jedward in, which actually was not bad as these things go.

That said, none can hold a candle to johnny ball and bellamy.
