Please help me settle an argument with SWMBO.

In searching for something a little different as my daily driver, I came across a mint, very low miles, 1999 E36 M3 convertible.

I see these, in top condition, as being one of the most beatiful cars on the road. My darling wife on the other hand believes that they are chav, -mobiles.

Who is correct.....?

Both.

Nice car if you're a petrolhead, but probably a bit chavvy to everyone else.

Neither, IMO an E36 M3 cab is way off deeply cool, but it certainly isn't chavy crap either.

I'm on my second one now. The first one lasted about a month and could be considered to be the "chav" end of the market.

I'd like to think my current one is towards the better end of the scale.

Completely unmodified is the key!

The convertible is the bottom of the m3 stack.

It's not deeply cool, convertible version of coupe never are. Trying a little too hard IMHO. However it's an M3 so it is a cool car and i'd have one if I could afford to run it.

Chav?

It seems that people use the word Chav to refer to anyone who they can find a reason to look down on these days.

Chavs are hoody wearing unemployed yobs who drink strong cider outside the local cornershop on a night and make a nuisance of themselves. If they drive anything it's a Corsa with a big exgaust or a knackered old Cavalier.

Chavs do not drive M3s.

Quite. Chavs drive 318 aiiiis with M3 badges. Even to the untrained eye they are very easily spotted.

Some M3s are descending into chav territory, but if it's been looked after and looks clean and unmodified, it's still cool - albeit not "deeply" cool.

A CSL is "deeply" cool (whichever one you're talking about)

I can't see E36 M3s quite going the way of the E30 in rising values/cool factor but they appear far scarcer than E46s, so you never know...

Not as cool as an Estoril Blue / silver leathered 4-dr.

Want. Want. Want.
