A block of wood under the rear wheels, the guy standing on the draw bar, to stop it launching into the stupid onlookers standing in front of the prop with kids! eek

Crikey, I have seen the Merlins and Griffins several times at Duxford always pointing away from the crowd though. That is bloody lethal.

At least there was H&S red and white mine tape there to protect the crowd smile

Yes, pretty dangerous but the prop is feathered to almost zero pitch. Just enough to provide a bit of cooling flow, although to move it when he cranks it up. haha

Appears to be an M-14P without a Yak attached to it. Barking mad, the lot of them. There is no way in Hell I'd start the engine with a crowd like that in close proximity.

Wonderful. I bet it smells wonderful too, hot metal and oil, nice.
Can anyone on here remember the smell of a hot aircooled bike engine that's been cleaned with Gunk? cloud9
Apologies to the OP for taking the thread off topic.
A good book if you like Merlin's or RR jet engines "Not Much Of An Engineer" by Sir Stanley Hooker. Some interesting stuff about the Harrier too.

I've seen two on Tornados, one when I was right in front of the jet walking in front of the pitot probe during a see off, the engine noise suddenly got very loud and the nose dipped, st me up seeing a pitot probe suddenly dip toward me! Pilot quickly caught the runaway and shut the HP cock almost immeadiately!

And seen one at an airshow when I was in the crowd, ran away with itself to destruction!

Ha spent many (un)happy hours down the aisle to the left of that, making labels for all the kits too big for tool stores!

that jet engine is certainly not healthy - the bottom portion is continually flaming out which will damage the internals

A friend of mine told me about a trip he made to an old school timber yard ,( the type with massive logs sawn and stacked for seasoning ) a week or so ago . Whilst waiting for the stuff he was buying to be sorted he noticed 2 Jet engines on pallets in one of the sheds , it appears they were from a Meteor .

The guys working there told him that every now and then they stick them in the back of a couple of old Transits , buy a couple of hundreds quids worth of fuel drive them to a nearby straight road , open the back doors of the Transits fire up the jets and off they go ! Couple of runs very early in the morning , shut the doors and then back to base !

He lives near Chepstow so keep an eye or ear open if you live round there !

Engines should have something attached to them. It makes me sad to see them revving away and not doing anything of use.

Was interesting watching the QANTAS 380 when itbreturned to Changi, seems there was some problem with shutting down the other engine on port wing, so they stopped it by filling it up with water from 2 big fire tenders!

Was certain.y making a lot of noise!
