t8cmf said: You can get the standalone Blackjax 5 system online for about £90-100. This gives you the anti-carjacking feature without having to have an existing Clifford alarm fitted. Not sure how much to fit though. I'm thinking of this myself although I've been told that it will bring up error codes on my E92 M3's dashboard. This is why I haven't done it yet. For that amount id definitely get it if there wasn't the issue with warning lights.

He was told by another company about how this affects the E92 M3. I can't find anything about it online nor can I find an E92 M3 owner with the standalone Blackjax 5 system fitted. I'm stuck in limbo until I know either way.

I've one fitted to my 335d.I don't know what issues there may be in the fitment to your M that are different to those of another BMW. All I will say is it's a fairly invasive job and includes tapping into the canbus system. I paid £350 fitted and the fitting took a good day in a workshop. There are outfits that will charge cheaper and state that they can do the job on your driveway or at work in a couple of hours! I have serious issues with this type of installation and this may be why error codes have appeared on other cars. Ive not had a single error code or issue. Initially,I was going to pay a lot more and get the full Clifford system(I've had two on various cars). However,I was told by my installer that most of the features would have to be deactivated when fitted to a BMW with canbus(I can't be more specific, sorry!). I'm an advocate of Blackjax-have been for years. It takes a bit of getting used to and expect phone calls from your dealership when they forget to disarm the system and it activates in the middle of the workshop!

That's great. Thanks for the feedback. I would imagine that my M3 and your 335d would mostly share the same electronic systems so I reckon it would work on mine. I think you are right that a shoddy install may well be the reason for any error codes generated.

I have had several Clifford alarms fitted over the years, the ones fitted in the workshop never gave me a problem, the one fitted on my drive gave me loads of problems, never again!

Glad to be of help-as Pugland says,it's a false economy-save a few pounds on the install and end up paying your dealership loads in rectifying the aftermath. I forgot to mention that before I had it installed,I liaised with my local dealership-Sytner,regarding the blackjax and BMW possibly refusing to cover me and my warranty. They raised no issues and said it would be fine.Ive since had various warranty work done without any problems at both Sytner and Rybrook and there have been no questions asked.

Did the main dealer fit the alarm?

No,an independent alarm installer. They did consult with BMW and Clifford to get things 'right' though,as it wasnt straight forward because of the canbus system.

Just picked up a new small Disklok for £75. Fits my E93 perfectly, feels rock solid and even looks quite nice.
Quick question, how difficult would it be to take the whole steering wheel off (with a disklok in place) and replace it with a spare?
Kinda makes the Disklok redundant if the theives are carrying around a spare steering wheel.

Are the 2008+ X5 & X6s affected by this OBD port type theft?

Why shoul we all be running around trying to solve this problem? Surely it is the responsibilty of the manufacturer ensure that someone can't just drive off with your car. This has now had national press coverage. It's time to put pressure on BMW to do something about this. I'd suggest all writing to Watchdog. It can be done very quickly online in about 5 minutes using the link below. WatchdogIf enough of us did it, we'd have a good chance of getting this complaint on national tv which would in all likelyhood force BMW to do something about it.

I have suggested just that four times on PH. It would appear, for whatever reason, that this has not happened. Still has to be the best way forward.
