Can anybody help out and describe exactly where chassis number is positioned on a genuine round tube Ginetta G4. We have not been able to locate the chassis number on our project car yet. The car have been stored in a cold storage for more than 30 years and the paint of the chassis is in bad condition with lots of surface rust that makes it difficult to see.
To be able to prove the identity of the vehicle to the authorities we would like to locate the number before we start working on the car (with sandblasting, new paint and all the rest).

Help with a description of exactly where we should search for the chassis number is very much appreciated! Or did the round tube cars even have the number stamped on to the chassis?

Give Ivor a ring on +44 (0) 1621 869 199 - I'm sure he will be able to point you in the right direction.

Yes the car is in Sweden, an ex racecar. My father in law have owned it since the mid 1970:ies.

Ok, upper left tube or cross member. We'll have a look there. Is the position close to anything that we can relate to (like a shock absorber mount or something like that). Front or rear part of the engine compartment?
Thanks for your help!

I was struggling to find it on my car too (1963 S1) until Trevor Pyeman came to see it. He rubbed the paint off around the area marked on the photo and hey presto the stamped number appeared.
Might be similar on yours??

Thanks guys! I'll inform my father in law so he can have a look at ours! With your help it shouldn't be a problem to find!

By the way, are there any known records of which years certain chassis numbers were made?

trevor pyman, GOC registrar and chairman, has a wealth of knowledge and records on the g4....he also has a prodigious memory! also the walkletts at DARE cars are a very useful source of knowledge and spares [as you probably know, Ivor designed the g4]
i'm restoring a square tube, and several people on here have done round tube restorations. anything I can do to help, just let me know...
good luck with the rebulld....keep us posted!

Good news! We have found a chassis number. However we need to bring the car out from its current storage position before we can have a closer look. Right now it's a little difficult to reach under the bonnet and we need to rub off some more paint first to make it possible to read the whole number properly. We will probably do that during the Easter holidays.
When we have the full number we will contact Trevor Pyman to see if he can help out regarding production year (and other facts).

Thank you all for your help and support!

Geoff, I am hoping to let Trevor have a look at it shortly.....as for pics, I'm afraid I'm rubbish at photography....digital cameras have a pathological hatred of me, and when I do get them to work, they go and lose all their cables, USB's and things, just to spite me.
I'm going to have to speak nicely to my daughter who has an ipod and can run rings around me when it comes to electronic gadgets....

Few more pictures/details about mine

I bought it from the 2nd owner in Detroit back in 2009. I flew over to see it, managed to agree on a price and had it shipped back to the UK.

It's been with the same family since 1964 and has done just under 7000 miles maybe the lowest mileage surviving G4?? Not that it really matters as it's going through a complete restoration.

Trevor was quite excited to see it as it's a series 1 with more upright front suspension and early fin tail rear. According to Trevor's information it was the very first G4 to be shipped to the USA back in April 1963.

Picture of the guy I bough it from racing it in 1968

Back at home, My Son is keen to get driving it!!

That's got to be Jack Walsh's G4 then, boss of Competition Car Engineering of Haverhill, Mass.
Was registered 3426 FZ. He drove it almost immediately in competition and scored a first, getting newspaper coverage.
The paper called it a Genetta!

Does a 60's square-tube G4 have a similar chassis number stamping?

Oh jeez, I forget the full story (Trevor, of course will know it by heart).

Jack's partner was George Kipps (he was English, so knew all about the G4).
George had seen the G4 race and got really interested and had an invite to Brands from the Walkletts - he came over with Jack to test the car - a pic is in Trev's book with them both in the NI reg car - and there is a reason it was in N Ireland and registered - believe it was shipped out to the States from there.

I've probably got that all arse about face, but I don't have Trev's Ginetta memory! biggrin

Possibly Norman Moffett was involved ?
