I'm tempted to suggest that it's more impressive than the old Hong Kong (Kai Tak) airport approach.

The old Hong Kong airport freaked me out - as did Funchal.

I'm not a happy flier. smile

Thanks to the mods for opening this thread again.

That must be something else to be in one of those hillside houses and see an A320 fly past below you at a couple of hundred MPH!

I guess they turn off terrain warning for approaches like that.

Pretty awesome for something the size of an A320 I must say. If I had to give up bush flying, this is what I'd want to do instead biggrin

yes At least I'd have known about Hong Kong - hadn't heard about the approach to Funchal until I suddenly found my nose brushing the sea during the approach!

Tegucigalpa, Honduras is a bit hairy too:

They had to remove a bit of the hillside in order to make an approach possible, and according to a pilot friend of mine, unless the wheels touch down in exactly the right position you are going off the cliff at the end!

The excitment doesn't stop when you get there - it is the current murder capital of the world!

I went to Tegucigalpa about ten years ago, it was about as moody as Glasgow on a bad night.

Didn't know it had gone to being the murder capital of the world, Caracas is pretty bad along with some Mexican cities as far as that region of the world goes.

Reading the latest news though it looks like Honduras is top of the tree followed by El Salvador! 88 murders per 100k citizens in 2011. Crazy.

The landing itself isn't anywhere near as bad for a passenger as the videos make it look.

That's because they can't see most of it!
