Ok so i aquired a 172 off the gf, its done 180k. Still on original engine, clutch etc.. Full renault service history and still goes really well. Testament to renaults newer breed of cars perhaps?!

Anyway, the gearbox is sloppy as hell, i never really drove it much before so am not sure if this is natural or whether i can put some new linkages in?!

It'd be really nice to have a less sloppy 'box...

Sloppy how?

Better when warmed up?

My 182 can be all over the shop for the first few miles, usually struggle to get 2nd gear, and I'd assumed it was just early morning stiffness!

Well its just like pushing a stick about in a bowl of oats.. It selects gears fine it just feels awful. My old evo box and the audi box feels like theres a gate there directing the shifter into a specific region, this 172 box just feels like theres too much ether between neutral and the cog..

They certainly couldn't be described as "short throw" when normal smile

Are you able to compare with another 172/182? Could just be the way the 'box is.

If it's the same as my DCi there's a rubber bush at the bottom of the gear lever where it connects to the connecting rod to the box. This wears and needs replacing. It's about a fiver from Renaults and you wouldn't believe the difference it makes by changing it.

As Jag racer has said, on the JC5 there is a bush on the bottom of the selector arm which can make a massive difference so check this out for wear. In the race car we had a lot of slop because we extended the linkage further back in the car. To combat this we fitted a stiff shift kit from a guy called Yanoo on cliosport forum. He offers quite a few different products so I would suggest going and trying him. If your not a member on there drop me a message and I will try and get an email address for you smile

Yanoo is a good guy and knows his stuff.

Have you drained the box fluid and tried some new transmission fluid?

It can also sometimes be due to worn engine mounts.
