I am a classic mini man myself.

I think the BMW Mini has timing chains.

In which case I would doubt if they are a regular replacement need. As on the A series but probably not alike in every other respect. Chains really should last for the life of the engine IMO.

Providing lubrication is working OK.

My OH has a 05 Mimi Cooper. Quick and very drivable car good on motorways excellent on winding lanes. Exceptionally low depreciation: she bought right (Very independent) has had the car three years and could get at least 80% of what she paid.

Very well made comfortable car. She had a Mini One before and before that. The Cooper is a much better drivers car much more responsive. Get the A/C model and the panoramic sunroof. Brilliant car for lane journeys through England.

Having read this I sound impressed. I am.

How old? First or second gen? If first gen, airbag lights, power steering pumps, life left in tyres especially if runflats ( can be pricey!) check oil levels - seems to be a more and more frequent problem reported. Condition of exhaust. From memory nothing much else. Check the stereo is not just a cassette deck unless you are still using 8 tracks!

Second gen, not much other than the obvious things to check with any used car purchase. You will read about the death rattle but this doesnt effect the One or Cooper.

All models check for the spec - it can help with resale. Chilli packs ( usually aircon, half leather and upgraded alloys) is expected. Nice to haves (imo) are the sunroof and half leather interior - always thought the standard seats looked crap.

Sorry for so much drivel.....

Ta. Looked at onme today. 58k, MINI One, leather, auto, cruise, a/c, FMSH etc. No alloys (a good thing for my daughter!), cosmetically excellent, long MoT, new service, pre ownered recently replaced front susp bushes, 4 x tyres (for Pirellis), 4 x discs and pads, had a/c regassed etc. For £4500 I don't think I can go wrong!

Get a warranty on the gearbox. If the CVT breaks, then BMW treat it as a sealed unit and you have to buy a whole new one (making it probably cheaper to buy a whole new One).
Keep a regular check on consumables. My neighbour's auto One used both oil and coolant quite quickly, usage was 30 mile commute into London and longer m'way journeys at the weekends.
