I work on my own, and have listened to talking books and, of course, music on my Walkman. But I've not found any good books to listen to recently, and music can sometimes get a little bit boring. Radio, I can only get Radio 2 in my workshop and that's alright in short bursts but they keep playing songs I don't like. So I thought I would experiment with a borrowed DAB radio, and with that I can get a usable signal, so bought a personal DAB radio and thought I'd try out some Radio 4.
I've listened to it all day (bar lunchtime) and it's been really really good, I wish I had discovered it sooner.

Best use of the licence fee by far IMHO - was listening to PM on the way home; they said the average age of their listeners is 56... that makes me a mere baby at 35!

Worth the licence fee on its own. +1 Sometimes variable on quality, but today has included, inter alia, Counterpoint and Unbelievable Truth and loads on books and Shakespeare, of course. No one's going to like everything, but this and the regular stuff makes for an above average R4 day for me!

Used to love the Radio 4 'Today' programme - listened to it every morning from 6am whilst driving home from my night shifts. That was back when I was in my late 20's - I never admitted to anyone else that I listened to it

Welcome to the fold At the weekend, I downloaded a great little app (not iphone) that searches all of the items available under listen again (radio only) saves them as mp3 files. There's also a website that lists torrents for 1000's of beeb radio programmes. The comedy stuff is first rate.

I've listened to Radio 4 since I was a teenager (I did used to switch over to John Peel at 10 ) and was often the only one who would say "Yes, it was really good/interesting" when the bloke whose family didn't have a TV mentioned something on the radio. I find Today a bit tiresome these days - I'm not a rabid Tory BBC hater, but even I'd say they inject far too much editorial into their reporting (much worse than the TV), but the 6:30 comedies are mostly great and they have some really intelligent, thought provoking programmes on that would get dumbed down (a la Panorama/Horizon) if on TV. The only programme I really dislike is Desert Island Discs - I'm not sure why really, but I can't listen to it at all! I can even enjoy the odd episode of the Archers ("Oooohh nnnnnnnooooooooooooo, Daaaaaaaaveeed!!" M

I listened to it in te car to / from work for a while last year. In the end some of the really boring discussion turned me off. I'll probably give it a try again though. For now I'm listening to Classic FM!

callyman said: Some great comedy on R4. You're not wrong. 6:30 most nights is worth a listen - a few duds, but not may, and a lot of shows and personalities have progressed to TV from this slot. Somebody also mentioned R34 Extra earlier - after the 6:30 R4 comedy re-tune to R4 Extra and get lots of brilliant historic comedy - The Goons, Kenneth Horne, The Navy Lark, and loads more. Our dinner gets served later now I've found it on the kitchen radio!

R4's not what it was, but still the best of a bad lot. Far too many repeats and very little 'original' programming these days. The shipping forecast is still the best programme though.

Radio 2 for Pop Master, the rest is Radio 4 and Radio 5. Henning Weig (sp) is brilliant PMSL.

Massive R4 fan here. Prefer most of its comedy to anything on TV. The News Quiz is funnier than HIGNFT, for example.
And you would get NOTHING like "In Our Time" on TV.
