I must have a 'thing' for 'purple-ish' Nissans, not really sure what that means though...scratchchin

At 2.5 years old, Mrs HH's Pathfinder needed a service and new tyres all round - big money. This got us thinking as to whether we really needed a large 7-seater 4x4. HH junior #1 has his own car, I'm looking for another car to add to my 370Z, so we figured we really don't need all those seats, although given our rural location, 4x4 was still a 'must'.

As a result, Mrs HH decided she'd like to go back to an X-Trail, having had a couple before the Pathfinders. So off I pop to my local and very friendly Nissan dealer to see what's what. He does me a great deal (after buying 12 cars there over the years, he knows where we'll end up, so cuts straight to the chase) on an X-Trail 2.0dCi auto.

Apologies for the crappy 'phone pics...

It's rather more car-like than the Pathfinder, unsurprisingly, and hugely more refined, whilst still giving an elevated drive (need that today to get in/out of the village with all this bloody water!). The Tekna spec. is generous to say the least - leather, leccy heated seats, panoramic sunroof, sat nav, Bose, hard drive, Xenons, etc, etc. BTW, the colour is 'Thundercloud' which of course is pretentious bks - they should call it 'bruise' or 'greyey purple' and be done with it.

So all in all, I really like it, and in these austere times I can say I've 'downsized*'.

*This really is a sop to my conscience to justify the new toy I'm searching for..

idea I may (or may not) have a chance of some amerous interaction later.

It depends entirely on the curry quality and the beer fridge quantity bounce

Don't take this the wrong way, but to confirm: you bought a brand new car to save the price of a set of tyres and a service....?

Indeed. For a number of reasons (we were skint all those years ago when we started on this long and winding road) we have always financed the balance of Mrs HH's car. The money I should have spent then to pay for it all when we bought her first new car was used on a Tiger 6, then a Caterham, then a kitchen (long, boring story), and after the kitchen I've utterly failed to recreate the halcyon days - and our lovely new extension is testament to that banghead.

A service and 4 tyres for the Pathfinder were going to be the best part of £1500, money that had to be spent to keep it legal, so we figured it might be a good time to downsize anyway. We really don't need the seats anymore as the 2 senior kids will all be independant with their own cars soon.

I used the cash I would have spent on the service and tyres against the new car - and as a result the monthly payments against the balance have gone down significantly.

And I have a sum to put against a new toy evil

Hope that makes sense smile ?
