Does anyone else on here think that for the first time in the 911's history the Cab looks as good as the Coupe? It seems to suit that marmite rear end a little better, and the extra large wheel arches make the tonneau and stowed roof less cumbersome than in earlier models.
Momentary lapse of reason? Or should I be buying some "Silver Fox" suntan lotion for the top of my head?

I put it to you that there is no cabriolet version of any car that looks better than the coupe version. With the hood up.

rob.kellock said: Spyder v Cayman?? Boxster vs Cayman For once the convertible was designed that way from the star & the roof was an afterthought Also, old shape Audi A4 convertible way nicer than the hardtop version (saloon) Merc SLK way nicer than the fixed roof equivalent (Crosfire) Last 2 cheating a bit I guess

But the more streamlined 991 coupe, with it's raked windscreen and AM-style rear, looks more sports GT-generic and less uniquely 911 (to me anyway). The cab looks better resolved, though I struggle with any 911 that lacks the traditional Bezier curve at the C pillar. And surely the point of a cab is how it looks with the top down? In answer to your question: Mk1 Golf GTi maybe? Or E36 M3?

991 cab styling looks very nice with roof up.
Down it suffers the usual 911 cab problem of engine in the way of clean stowage, never looks right although each new model improves on it
Roof down the new boxster looks way better than the new 991 cab IMHO

The side profile is certainly impressive but to my eyes, the rear and rear-three-quarters have almost totally lost the trade-mark 911 look. The new tonneau panel is so large that it eats into the area that should have been reserved for the rear wings and we are left with a car that appears to have been designed with a view to accomodating the soft-top. The solution for the rear wings is almost an afterthought and is visually less substantial even though they symbolise the business end of this iconic car. In previous iterations, the rear wings were more obviously 'designed' to house the rear wheels and it was the storage for the convertible top that was an afterthought, as it should be - if you get my drift? I almost think that they should have gone one step further an made the tonneau cover even larger so that it encompassed the rear wings and created a rear clamshell panel.

Momentary lapse of reason? Or should I be buying some "Silver Fox" suntan lotion for the top of my head? With the roof up it looks ok,still looks s t with roof down, the back end unbalances it far too much.

I almost think that they should have gone one step further an made the tonneau cover even larger so that it encompassed the rear wings and created a rear clamshell panel. I see what you're getting at but I think the wings are more clearly defined in certain colours (especially Guards ) . Yes the tonneau panel design could be even bolder, but I like the step in that direction. Note the elegant and complementary curve of the tonneau as it nestles into the rear deck. This cab looks less like a beheaded coupe and more like a wedge-shaped spyder. In the second image it has more (than the coupe) of that subjective quality "character" that I look for in car design. And if the 991 has lost some of its 911-ness (I've driven it 3 times and feel rather that it has), perhaps the traditionally easier-riding cab best suits its latest on-road incarnation I like

I think it's because of the superior integration of the the tonneau cover into the rear deck. For the first time the raised rear looks purposeful rather than tacked on (to my eyes).

rob.kellock said: Spyder v Cayman?? You make a good point here. One of the best looking soft tops still doesn't look as good with the roof up as the hard top version. Didn't Clarkson say the soft top on the Spyder look like a tramps hat.

991 Cab roof up is the best looking cab in the market. I prefer that shape to the coupe, smooth and flowing and very contemporary.
roof down however ....
