My favourite body shop have refused to take on the rebuilding of a classic Mini bootlid. It's from a '69 MkII and has the full inner skin. They're a bit rare. It has rust on both the inner and outer skins. The guv'nor reckoned it would take a day for one bloke - say £220 - and "it would never be right."

£220 is a bit steep but possible at a pinch, but the "it would never be right" is a problem. Because the damage is at the same place on both skins, the guy attempting the repair is working in thin air.

His advice was to keep looking on eBay. Another one would be unlikely to be perfect. Don't want a replica, particularly don't want a glassfibre one.

So, the fix. Anyone been this way? Is it possible? Are there specialists? Is there an old boy seeing out the twilight of his autumn doing repairs like this as a hobby?
