On a serious note I am massively underwhelmed by Martinez as basically he is being interviewed on the strength of half a dozen or so games at the end of the season to manage their great escape. FFS.
For me, my favourite is Brendan, however Van Gaal also appeals. I believe Brendan would fit in with the philosophy more, and Swansea play great football and have been consistent throughout. Not just this season either.

I can see why you'd be disappointed with Martinez. When Whelan bangs on with his "He will be at a major European club at some point" I'm always thinking... really? Doesn't really bother me for obvious reasons but I don't see why Whelan frothed at the mouth over him.

Quite. Wigan have always been s  t under him as far as I can tell. I think the fanbase in general is massively underwhelmed too tbh. If things do not go well there will be a Hodgson situation I reckon. FSG need to tread very carefully.

DW will get 3 million or so from us if we sign Martinez. I wonder how much we had to pay out to Dalglish on top of that?

Christ, what a load of old toss. FSG, this company with some experience of successfully running a sports team...the ones who admitted they had stuff to learn about "soccer" in the UK...the ones who have kept (and promoted) Ian Ayres (a die hard - and successful - Red) as main custodian of the business over here...
Do you seriously think they have no idea what they're doing? They might not feel for the club the way we do (although I'm sure Ayres does) but it is in their interests for it to be successful. They want a return - that will only happen with success. These are people who took the time to attend games, learn some of the songs and sing along with YNWA. They made an effort they had no need to do. Doesn't make them "one of us", they know that - but at least it shows some empathy with supporters.
They will be doing all they can to make the club successful again. Whoever gets appointed, it will be based on knowledge not available to anyone on here. Would be quite refreshing if we could all just wait and see what happens and then get behind the coach/manager/whatever is appointed and give them all our full support. They will need it.

I agree with HR, in that Martinez could be an underwhelming appointment. He could of course prove us all wrong, and be a blinding (and cheap) route to long term success.
How long would Liverpool fans accept being outside of the top 4 in order to support a long term level of success, for example as was given to Ferguson in the 80s at United?

It's certainly a good question, but things were very different back then. A lack of CL football hurts anyone outside the Top 4 (usually  ) so much, that even if the fans have the patience, it's difficult for the club to be as accommodating.

just saying like Yeah but I wasn't that surprised - knowing how business people work, their own stated goal of top 4 last season and the less than good media interaction, it wasn't a big surprise. They evidently know what they want to put in place, they're now working to find the right people. Jury is still out on whether or not its right to tap people up in advance. I don't think it is. I don't honestly think the question is relevant in modern times for the reasons you state. Foregone conclusion that the manager would be changed and someone else tried. More than one season (for any one manager in post) out of the CL for one of the "big clubs" would result in dismissal, regardless of what the fans want. And frankly the fans (on recent showing) will be the least patient of all...

Stick Guardiola, Hiddinck, Capello or any world class manager in there and, if things don't go well, you'll have a Hodgson situation IMO. I think there's too much stock put in past glories and a reluctance to acknowledge the current situation.

By the way I thought that seeing as he loved the club so much he wouldn't take any compensation? Once again utter cultish bull. And you forget that there are candidates out there that are more proven than Martinez that wouldn't require compensation. But hey since when has the facts ever mattered on this thread. In the end I reckon the tea lady could do a better job than Dalglish so I'm rather relaxed about it from that perspective. It seems FSG don't want a manager but rather a coach that picks the match day team and formation. For that Martinez might be good enough. All I see is once again we experiment with something that is likely to fail. Football is a simple game that is being over complicated by owners that don't understand the game. FSG sem to be going from one mistake to another
