Question for those who've been living with PDCC on a 991 in recent months. Are you glad you specced it? Or thinking you needn't have bothered? Any observations on its virtues and defaults? Manks? Tony1234? Anyone else... Virtual beers for honest appraisals

Any observations on its virtues and defaults? Manks? Tony1234? Anyone else... Virtual beers for honest appraisals Honest answer - I haven't had chance to fully evaluate it yet. Not helped by the fact that my car is still at the dealership for what appears to be a gearbox problem and it doesn't look like I'm getting it back any time soon. PDCC doesn't magically make the car 20% faster through the bends and there's an element of learning to be confident to corner faster. However, there have been occasions when I've come out a bend grinning because of PDCC. The 991 feels a good deal sharper than the 997 and PDCC makes it feel sharper again. I'm driving a 997 C4S at the moment and whilst it's a nice car it feels wooly when compared to the new car and, dare I say it, a bit boring. I think tyre pressures will prove to be critical with PDCC. With limited body roll, more of the information required to corner quickly is coming from the tyres and if they are too hard that information is limited. I haven't had chance to mess about with pressures much, but small changes seem to make a lot of difference. My gut feeling is that PDCC is worth having, but it is not an immediate no-brainer in my opinion. That is not to say that the difference is minimal, I think it will take some learning to get the best from it but I suspect eventually I will not want to be without it. Not the black and white answer you were looking for, then, but does it warrant a virtual Peroni?

Gearbox problem already? That is unlucky Manks. Pdk or manual?

Not the black and white answer you were looking for, then, but does it warrant a virtual Peroni? Thanks Manks. You do seem to be having some bad luck with that car. I hope everything is sorted soon. When you talk about tyre pressures making a big difference, is that difference in feel/feedback, or difference in performance/effectiveness of the PDCC? Italian beer? Surely a Becks would be more appropriate. I owe you one all the same.

Bloody hell Manks, by the time you get it back to use/enjoy it, it'll be worth £10k less than a GTS

Porkupine - PDK
Betternotbigger - The two are inter-related. Optimising tyre pressures makes it possible to push the car harder and so benefit more from PDCC.
Phooey - Bugger off.

What's wrong with the PDK?

It was possible to drive through the noise and I was quite confident that the problem would be traced to a rogue Pirelli. However with a different set of wheels and tyres the problem was still there. The Tech has, as I understand it, tracked it down to the transaxle.

Ok thanks Just interested because my wife's 981S PDK has been delayed at the port for some more QC so just wondered if it was related at all, probably not but you never know!

Possible, but I doubt it. I haven't heard many other reports of gearbox issues. There was a fuel line recall, might be to do with that.

Virtual beers for honest appraisals Well my 2p's worth, I specced it because I new I'd regret it a few month's after I took delivery because I always like to have the best 'toys' on a car, the way I drive (age now 67 and steady) I just don't need it but on the very odd occasion I've gone into a corner quick/ish I've been impressed after driving the same corners in a 997S If you are buying a new 991 on a shoestring don't order it unless you go into every corner like a hooligan, the other benefit I found was a smoother ride than a 997S. As a side issue, I've got a letter of intent for a turbo for March 2014 however my 991S+PDK is far and away more than I need and such a good car that I think I'll just keep this. Make mine a large Latte please

Where PDCC fits into that will depend, I think, on what you intend to use the car for and how "into" cars you are. Based upon other exchanges I suspect you are quite into them. If you're going to drive the car fast or on a track I think PDCC is a definite yes. But if you don't plan on doing so and want a car that feels immediately familiar then don't spend your fantasy money on it.

And I do feel that there is less point in a 991 which feels like a 997. But I'd want it to still be a 911... which no doubt the 991 is, but I wouldn't want to dial out TOO much character... hopefully the PDCC gives as well as takes...

There is a bit of 997-ness about the 991 non-PDCC. It's faster, sharper and less boingy but the lineage is apparent. Whilst I haven't timed myself I suspect I was driving known sections of bendy road faster in my PDCC 991 than in the 997 I owned or the loaner I currently have. However, there is one bend where I am slower in the 991 and this is where I think tyre pressures are playing a part. The bend in question is a right-hander with a crest followed by a left-hander. The 997s suspension gives the impression of "hanging" and remaining in contact with the road, whereas the 991 PDCC (not tried it in a non-PDCC car) gives the sensation that it will take off if driven any faster. However, I suspect that this is only a sensation and I suspect it is to do with PDCC and tyre pressures. You know the sensation when driving a car with over-inflated tyres? It's like that and I suspect that lower pressures will dial it out. But then, just when I thought I'd mess about with tyre pressures a bit, I took my car in for what I thought would be a day's work and that was nearly three weeks ago...

You poor chap. Thanks for the insight. At least you're getting to talk about the car even if you can't drive it..,
