On 3 May 2012, the Placer County (CA) Courthouse accidentally summoned 1,200 people to jury duty on the same morning.  Taking their duty seriously, residents tried to be on time but the traffic jam was too much.

Unlike the UK where every good and true man posts on PH "How do I get out of Jury Service as a powerfully built director of many companies I am far too important for it."

fk that. How do I get called up for a few weeks off work?

Nothing too unpleasant please, I don't want to lose sleep or be psychologically damaged, just something interesting and time-consuming enough to get me those weeks off.

I'm 35 and I've never been called up while a guy I work with is 33 and has done it three times.

When lawyers were not allowed to serve on juries, I was called four times. Each time I wrote in pointing out that I could not lawfully serve on a jury. each time I received a pompous letter telling me that my request for a deferral had been accepted this time, but lecturing me on my civic duty (a duty which I wholeheartedly accept). I did not bother to reply pointing out that any jury with me on would (as thing stood then) be invalidly constituted.

Now that lawyers can serve on juries, I eagerly scan the post, keen to offer to the community at large my well honed lawyer skills in ****ing up other people's lives, but the call does not come.

Funny that.
I had 2 summonses whilst in the job, ( Before officers were allowed on juries).
Nothing now that I am willing and able...

My colleague who's been called three times said that one jury selected came back looking ashen and a few visibly upset last time he was called up. I know that people do horrible things to each other but I don't want to fill my head with all the details particularly.

My colleague didn't actually get selected for a jury last time. He just sat around for three days in the court then came back to work. He also said that women are generally much less lenient than men on juries and that on one jury several of his fellow jurors clearly didn't really understand what was going on and what they were supposed to do so the jury of twelve was effectively a jury of about seven or eight.

Ah.......... jury duty

Or having a group of 12 individuals who are not clever enough to avoid jury duty decide your fate.

Marvellous.

I got called for jury duty once and I can only say I hope I'm never wrongly accused of anything. When we were deciding the verdict, for about half the jury it was a case of how quick can we get this done I want to go home, don't worry we're only deciding if someone will get a criminal record or not, I'm sure it's not that important to the defendant.

Some even walked back into the court with their jackets on they were so eager to get off home. I felt ashamed for them.

I had a very similar experience in my 2nd case. They were a real set of tards. Late, disinterested. The evidence was absolutely pitiful too, but half of the jury was absolutely hell bent on a conviction. I found it quite disturbing to be honest.

I've had the misfortune of seeing some evidence I really wish I hadn't. It sure does make you want to beat a person to death....

And convictions rise before a weekend, it's Friday afternoon syndrome. Sadly there are always those who don't give a monkeys about what happens to the poor sod has been accused.

But until someone comes up with a better and fairer way to do things..........

I had completly the opposite experience. The two cases that I sat on while doing jury service last year were taken with all seriousness by all the jurors and we were all anxious to see justice done.

I was somewhere hot and sandy when I got the call. I asked my OC, but he refused to let me go as I had to keep the streets of Basra safe instead frown.

If that's about £60 then I've got some good news for you.

It's a civic duty, serving on a jury. If everyone took the attitude you ironically caricature then we'd have to abandon juries altogether. As Jasandjules said juries are a bit like democracy, far from perfect but the best we've got.

If you are self employed, are you exempt?

I would have difficulty if called, even if there was sufficient compensation, since my (regular) customers rely on me being available to do their work, and might well be forced to go elsewhere - I already have great difficulty getting away for holidays!
