2011 XC70 T6, superb ride and seat comfort with a very relaxed, torquey, quiet and smooth driveline. XC60 too and generally speaking, just about any 900 Series or 2000-onwards V70/XC70 or S80. S60 and V60 are a bit firmer and XC90 too unsettled.
Other notables include E38 Seven Series on 16" wheels, L322 Range Rover V8 on sensible wheels, E39 Five Series petrol saloons on SE suspension and 15/16" wheels.
The X308 XJR with its adaptive damping is a thing of wonder too, the more modestly shod XJ8s better still, but the XJR also handles the corners much more tidily without sacrificing ride on the altar of containing body-roll.

Interesting that no-one has even mentioned Rolls-Royce. Are we all anti-snob, or do we not have the experience ?
Interesting too, how many Jaguars of various ages get the nod. Except for X-Types, I agree with that trend ....

You know what I find makes a car much more comfortable? Bottom hinged accelerators, like the one found on my merc: (I am 6 foot 2 with legs a smidge taller than my torso mind you) Makes driving for longer periods much more comfy. I just cant get comfy in the missus fabia or even the inlaws qashquai.

The closest I've been is in the BMW Sevens that donate the driveline, but I don't know to what extent suspension/chassis technology is shared between E38 & Seraph, E65 & Phantom and F02 & Ghost. More than RR comfortably would let on I would guess...

Now sadly dead, but my Lancia Thema, I could drive her to the moon and back, wonderful alcantara armchairs, and a good relaxed driving position.

As an S60 owner I'd agree that the seats are sumptuous, but I don't think the ride is anything special, in fact I find it quite fidgety on poor surfaces. Then again, it would probably be better if it wasn't on 18"s.

Volvo 850 GLT 2.5 20V
- automatic!
The seats were fab, best vehicle I've had for motorway travelling on holiday with kids, bicycles, etc etc, esp with self levelling suspension.
Sub 25 mpg not so brilliant (nearer 33 mpg on long run).
Recent Smax 1.8 Td very close and better handling, but not as relaxing (but 50+ mpg).

Just got myself a new motor. Thought my previous one was comfortable (Mk3 Mondeo LX), but this one is infinitely better.
Quiet enough that a conversion can be had at 80mph without raised voices, and bumps don't seem to exist in any way at all, and the climate control can keep the cabin at a set temp without melting your face off followed by freezing your feet.
It's a Mk5 Astra Elite. Leather seats, comfort suspension and 205-55/16 tyres, diesel engine. Wafty.

Not mine but my old man had a 1990 vintage S class (W126?) for a while. The combination of the hewn from granite contruction (the doors weighed an absolute tonne) a huge woofling V8 and magic carpet like ride from the hydropneumatic suspension meant that this thing was quite unflappable over even the worse roads\potholes. It honestly felt like you were riding on a cushion of air as long as you didn't try to pitch it too hard into corners at which point it felt like you were in a boat rather than a car.
Have distinct memories of wafting along at well into 3 figures on an overseas trip with nothing but the subdued noise of the V8, quietly accompanying the rapid progress. Not been in a more comfortable car since and that includes all sorts of newer Mercs.

Toss up between my old Rover 414SLi sofa-car, and my A4 Quattro Sport. Surprisingly good ride for an Audi on 18's, but then it wasn't an S-line, and the heated leather seats, with all the electric adjustment you'd ever need, and armrest, made it a very nice place to sit.

Current E38 740iL. I bought it for just under £4k in early 2009 and been 'bargain barging' ever since. Awesome vehicles for not a lot of cash.

My old Caterham Roadsport - drove thousands of miles throughout Europe and always felt cosseted and very comfortable. Have owned numerous Jags, Mercs etc and never felt as comfortable as in the Caterham.

For over all ride, seat and relaxing experience it has to be my E34 525 and 540. Both on 15" rims, big leather armchairs and effortless to drive Currently my X-type SE (on 16s) with electric adj leather is showing to be good for 3+ hours at a time with no aches but not as good as the BMW for that living room on the move feeling
