I doubt it was on purpose. Most of the Syria related news is nearly impossible to verify because they cant get in to the place, so they take what they're given. The BBC clearly failed to check its sources properly before publishing it though.

I'd lean towards incompetence rather than malice, but it's still pretty shoddy. I'd have thought running images through a reverse image search like Tineye would be the first thing to do in this sort of situation?

I liked the one when ITV claimed that they had footage of the IRA when in fact they had footage from a video game.

Agree. The BBC really let themselves slip sometimes. They are very shoddy sometimes.
