Hi all. Just tested my set up to get live race coverage in campsite. Freesat box (not freeview)and standard oval sky dish just picked up German eurosport free on Astra satellite 1H 19.2E by sticking it out window. Just need to tune into radio le mans for English commentary when there. Just to mention there were some other interesting German channels too. Lol
I've downloaded free satelite finding app on my mobile that works from your gps location & angle measuring app to get elevation right. Then googled Astra 1 to get frequency etc and available channels. Hope this helps if you were thinking of doing something similar. Enjoy!

Interesting. I realise this is an old topic, but I am hoping to do exactly the same for Le Mans 2014.

Anybody know how much the race is covered by Eurosport Germany? (I am aware there is also a Eurosport 2 germany, which I believe is HD, and not FTA)

Just to update you. It worked well last year apart from the satellite finding app was playing up but I had a fairly good idea which way to point it (virtually parallel to the mulsanne straight in direction of Tours I think). Last year eurosport 2 was apparently available on romanian or bulgarian satellite but we couldn't be bothered to move dish and from what I remember I'm sure the majority of the coverage was on german eurosport 1 anyway.

Great, thanks for the update. Of course, if I can convince a mate with Sky to loan me a Sky box for a week (unlikely!) I can just point it at 28.2E and get UK Eurosport, and all the UK channels!

Out of interest, does anybody know if a digital tuner in a UK TV (freeeview) can pick-up any French terrestrial TV over there, and is anything of the race broadcast on that?

For anybody interested, I believe the details are:

Eurosport Deutschland is at 19.2 E - 12.226 / H / 27.497

You can get FTA SD satelite kits (STB dish and LNB) for about £50

Yes TNT (French terrestrial digital telly) uses the same standard as Freeview so a modern box or telly should pick it up. However FranceTV only broadcast two hours at the start and two hours at the finish plus a couple of half hour bulletins.

A couple of years ago my mate had just moved house and his old sky card still worked which was a far easier option. I did ask my wife if she'd mind if I nicked the sky card for the week.... you can probably guess the reply! lol

My mobile network (3) offer unlimited data for £5 per day in Europe. I could easily install the Eurosport player on my iphone and view the coverage on there. I can also airplay this to my apple TV if I take a router or use personal hotspot, therefore displaying this on the TV. I have done this at home many times.

This may actually be a better option, as it is only £3 for a month of Eurosport on the mobile, and they have a dedicated 24/7 channel on the player for the event, independent of the standard Europort 1 and 2 channels.

Does anybody know what the quality of mobile data is around the circuit? is it saturated and therefore rubbish, or is it pretty good?

So for anybody interested, I got a cheap 60cm dish on ebay, which comes apart for flat storage, and a cheap £20 FTA satellite receiver.

It took around 5 minutes to find Astra 1 at 19.2E. There are several English language news stations available, in amongst hundreds of foreign channels. Eurosport Germany is obviously there too. It was actually very easy to setup. The receiver I bought is very basic, but works well for what I want. I stored Eurosport Germany, BBC World News, and a few others, as favourite channels, so next time I turn the receiver on (probably in France!) It will go directly to this channel, and pressing "info' brings up a handy signal strength and quality graph, which will help with dish alignment.

This is slightly off topic, but I thought I'd share anyhow, on the off chance that it is useful to somebody in the future;

Regarding Sky UK, there is common myth that a viewing card must be paired to a specific sky box for it to work. I believed this to be the case initially, but it isn't. An active Sky UK card will work in any Sky DIgital box. Pairing of the card with the box IS required to view the premium Sky channels which appear to be the Movie and Sports channels. The F1 channel may also fall into this category, but the vast majority of channels can be viewed by simply inserting a valid sky card into any sky digital box (HD or none HD). Obviously the card needs to belong to an active account. I haven't tested this with a multiroom card, but I suspect it will work the same.

My Dad has Sky HD (everything but the movies and sports) so I decided to test this today. We dug out an old Pace Sky digital box from circa 1998, one of the first ever models. I forced a software update (hold down backup button on the front of the box with the box turned off at the mains, Keep holding the button and turn the power on, continue to hold it until the update message appears on the screen -The box must be connected to the satellite dish for this to work. -No phone line connection is required).

After the update the box searched for listings for a while. Presumably during this phase the box updates all the latest channels, as when I entered the guide, new channels such as Sky Sports F1 were present, which they certainly weren't when this box was last used over 10 years ago. As there was no viewing card initially, the BBC One and ITV channels were LONDON. I inserted his viewing card, taken from his HD box, and it again searched for listings, after displaying "initialising card" for a few seconds. BBC One and ITV N.E. & Cumbria then appeared (which is the correct region for his account). I tested Eurosport 1 and 2, and both worked perfectly, as did most other Sky channels (Sky One etc).

Oddly BBC Two wasn't at its usual position, it was further down the listings. This may be because the card wasn't paired, or there was some other issue. All the main FTA channels (BBC, ITV, C4 etc) were all available as you would expect, and working.

This is interesting as many of us may have access to old Sky Digital boxes. They can also be picked up for around £10. Whist it is a little unreasonable to take the expensive family SKY HD box into France for 5 days, it is possibly slightly more acceptable to take it's viewing card for use in an old spare box!

If you do have to pair a viewing card with the receiver and you have internet then you can do it on line providing you have set up an online id with Sky, saving making a phone call to them.
Every time I take my Sky+ card to France and insert it into the Sky+ box I have to pair it with the box, it usually takes about 10 minutes for the card to pair with the box.
When I return to the uk I again have to pair the card with the uk box.

Ive just posted this over at BeerMountain, but I thought I would add the same here as it is kind of related to this topic....

Does anybody know if MotorsTV cover the race, in addition to Eurosport? If so, is it the full 24 hours?

I ask because (maybe somebody can confirm) I think Motors TV is a FTV channel (Free to view) meaning it is encrypted, but can be viewed with any Sky card, even cards that non longer have an active subscription?
