Hi Guys, I am new to all this Mini Stuff, so please be gentle.
Just put a deposit on a 2007 Mini Cooper S that SHMBO fell in love with. Its
a privae sale, the car is imaculate and covered 66,000 miles. We had a good test
drive, the car drove well with no nasty supprises and good performance.
When we got back to the sellers house, I turned the car off and re-started it, just to
make sure there was no hot starting issues. When the car restarted, the engine warning
light came on in both the large central display and the small display in front of the
steering wheel. After a approx 10 seconds, the engine light went out from the small display
behind the steering wheel but remained on in the large central display.
Now, the seller, who was a nice guy, had said he will get this looked into and sorted before
I take the car, but I just wanted to ask, is there any known issues with engine lights comming
on.
A few pointers I would mention is that the car was not re-road tested to see if the light went
out from the central display and in my opinion, I thought the aircon was poor.when the engine
was turned off the cooling fans ran at full speed for a few minutes.
Could this be a thermostat issue???

You put a deposit down on a car with issues ?
There are loads of MCS on the market and prices are depressed.
Try and move on to another one if you can recover your deposit.

Fans staying on after the car is turned off is nothing to worry about imho. My 12 plate demo does it too.

I had a R56 Coppers S and I loved the car. At about 50,000 miles, some issues came to be, to be specific the engine light. To cure this they changed the high pressure fuel pump and the coolant pump. If the coolant pump is not working well, the fan can stay on for a long while after the engine switch off and therefore draining the battery. For my fortunes I had the extended TLC pack so the costs were covered - half a day in the work shop.
Other little issues that you might want to feel for is the movement of the gearshift, at about 45,000 miles the gearshift selector left me being able to drive but engaging 3rd and 5th became an art. This got changed again under the warranty. The could are also items that I had the experience with where the 4th coil decided to not work too well so it put the engine light on. For this I changed all the coils won a while I wait appointment for the cost of 75 GBP's.
Besides these items nothing else and ownership was great. I sold the car as I had to have more space, miss it.

...Thanks AndyM31. As its back to normal today, I have spoken to the Mini Dealer who
serviced the car three weeks ago, they had no faults stored in the engine managment
at service time. Infact they only picked up on some slightly worn rear brake pads
everything else on the service and health check came back good.
The owner is going to get it checked out with the same Mini dealer who serviced it and
give me a copy of the invoice for work done, so it should be happy days!!!
The guy I spoke to at the Mini dealer was helpfull and even told me about keeping
a eye on the timing chain as thats the only thing they have had a few issues with.

In mini speak " slightly worn pads" = good for at least another 10k

swerni said: In mini speak " slightly worn pads" = good for at least another 10k 'Tis true. I have had the service warning for my front brake pads on 1100 miles for the last 9000 miles. Don't quite understand how the sensors work - or whether I just don't drive the car like the previous owner? Mike

The sensors on the brakes are to be changed with every new set of pads and discs as far as I am aware. The sensor units are not reusable and cost about 20 GBP's each.
