For anyone thinking of travelling coast to coast up here, the road is currently blocked at Garve due to a rockfall.
Thanks for this, heading back to Glasgow from Ullapool today, was considering the scenic route via the gairloch but with incidents popping up everywhere and travelling with the family I'm thinking the a9 might be the way to go. Btw I hate the A9!!
The A835 at Garve has been reopened - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-north-east-o...
Only one lane though so expect delays.

If you hate the A9 that much maybe avoid it altogether?
B roads from Raigmore to the A939 then A93 to Perth.
Motorway all the way from there to Glasgow.
The eastern side may be a bit less affected by the bad weather.
Best to check first though - http://trafficscotland.org/currentincidents/
Thanks Red devil, the A82 looks pretty clear with the exception of the lights south of ft william so thinking of taking my chances with it!

Looks familiar - that's the area we were exploring on Friday!

Came home on Sunday, just in time too judging by the weather and the road closures. We didn't do too badly, dodged the worst of the weather for the full two days we had up there. Just love the deserted open roads and the wilderness to explore, can't wait to go back.

Anyway, some pics, all from the same spot although the first image isn't mine, it was taken by a mate (my car, though).

Well happy to report an uneventful trip home, came down through Muir of Ord\Beauly to Drumnadrochit then the A82 all the way home. The landslip at Garve, caused us a two min delay and again just north of Corran ferry was another 2mins. Creditt to the roads people they seem to be on the ball in dealing with these incidents. Ironically the weather was great the whole way home, coming up through Glencoe and the Rannoch Moor was stunning. I get the same feeling every time I come home after a trip up North, I almost feel claustrophobic coming back to busy roads!

Again. When did that happen? A mate of mine was up there a while back when they had the wee ferry on to bypass it and I came across alternate one way and half hour closures when I was up there last when they were installing armoured netting.

Happened the day before yesterday. Our post has to come the long way round so is a day late. There are endless arguments about what to do with this road... which may be why the Highland Council website isn't flagging the road as closed!!

I see the old Rest-and-be-Thankful was pressed into use as a diversion for the new A83 when that was blocked.

I just want to say a massive thanks to all who have contributed to this thread. I recently returned from a brilliant road trip around Scotland, and most of my route was based on recommendations from this thread.

You can check out some photos from my recent adventure here:

Thanks again all.

HELP ANYONE

After 5 years of doing a 4 day tour around most of Scotland we have used many small hotels and pubs, next years route includes stopping somewhere close to the M74 first night then Skye 2nd night using the ferry from Mallaig. Around Skye then up around Kylesku for the 3rd night. On the forth night we need somewhere near Aberfeldy

The group includes couples and singles so we need around 7 rooms each night, good places we have used in the past include Kilberry inn, The pier house, Kylesku hotel, The royal an Lochan hotel and The applecross inn. Looking for some ideas of where to try next we like small hotels and pubs which the whole group can fit in with a budget of around £200 per couple including food per night good access is needed with safe parking

Any ideas

I always struggle round there. Depends how "near" it needs to be but can recommend Glen Spean Lodge at Roy Brigde

Hi Lancs Dave

Planing to come down further east than that if possible. We would use Kylesku again but it's all ready booked for that weekend in May any ideas welcome

The Scourie hotel has always seemed quite smart when I've stopped for coffee and prices look reasonable. Never stayed there or eaten though.

Anywhere on Skye in particular?

Who me ?

J13 on 74 any good. There's Days in the service area ( gets 3*) ,but further up the road there's the Tinto House hotel at Symington . ML12 6FT. I've stayed there a couple of times on business, on one occasion going out before breakfast and it was no trouble for the night porter to find coffee and a sandwich at six in the morning. Food was excellent ,well presented and in quantity.
If you can stay on the mainland before crossing to Skye, via Mallaig, you might try the West Highland Hotel . Certainly large enough for your party. It always had a good name ,and I know the last owners bettered that (He was a mate, who introduced me to my wife about46 years ago ,but I;ll forgive himlaugh), and I see from the web site that present owners look to keep that up.

FYI - Bealach to Applecross closed tonight.

This is sea level, so it'll be wild up there.
