Just to get things rolling (and because I need new gear - £20 tent from Tesco, a road atlas some beans and beer and a car poinitng north doesn't, apparently, count as a viable family holiday) I thought I'd start a 'what gear would you get' thread.

Money not much of an object, I'd get a 4motion California

and tow a FifthWheel Inos beind it - it has slide-out sides!

Ideal set up - you could leave the Inos at your main base and go off for short adventures in the California, or just use it for a cup of tea and a sit down smile

I'm old, aren't I?

I'd like a '57 Airstream Safari to tow behind my '57 Chevy but I have no where to keep it frown

I prefer the new Eterniti range, slide outs etc, being built by Yanks over here, so they know how to maximise what they can get inside..

And a lot cheaper, leaving more money for beer and toys.

Enlighten me with the motor home thing.

I would just find it a tremendous PITA to get somewhere beautiful (say, Northern Scotland) park up, have my meal and then fancy a bit of an explore and have to put everything away, disconnect the hook up and then drive a behemoth like that down narrow roads.

I'd be not much more impressed with the idea of scooting about in a Lupo or something that I'd towed up on a dolly.

I think a little camper and a big caravan is the way to go smile

Wouldn't bother me scooting around in a Smart or similar that I had towed up there.

I understand what you are saying about having to put everything away to go and get a pint of milk, but for me Motorhomes win out over Caravans, just more comfortable imo.

We just use our bycicles.... Anything up to 15 miles is fine as a leisurely bike ride... Any further and we'd take the motorhome..
But just for a bit of exploring, or to fetch a few groceries etc, bike works fine...... Or if we wanted to get into town, we'd go on the bus...

I wouldn't tow another vehicle though..... The idea of swapping our caravan for a motorhome, was to get away from towingsmile

One area for us where the camper works out better than the caravan.... Is the spontaneity of it....

When we had the caravan we would always plan our trips away and book sites etc, and we'd never use it for say just a weekend...
Whereas with the motorhome, we get up in the morning, and say, right off to N. Wales for a day and off we go... The camper is always in ready mode, so all we have to do is chuck a bit of milk in the fridge, check we have some water and off to go...

Quite often we go off for the day, and end up coming back the next day.... Just find a quiet spot and park up..smile

We are similar with our MH.
We pitch up and we are there, the large fridge freezer is stocked with food & booze so no mid week shopping, we have the bikes with us if we fancy a short outing.

We find this more relaxing than having a car or motorbike with us, if you have a car or similar there is the tendency to have to go "somewhere" everyday and come back needing another holiday.

A Volkner would be alright I suppose

But I'd much prefer Jenny, a 1961 type 2 locally owned split screen. This to me is just perfect

Though to be honest this to me is the perfect family holiday!!

We did one last year, 31st August, last minute surprise camping trip to Stoke Gabriel  (my youngest son's name being Gabriel), woke my boys up at 4am after secretly packing the car with my trust 6 man tent and gear, with new luxury electric cool box, the night before after they'd gone to bed. 260 miles later and we were set up and sat by the pool just after 9am, best road trip and holiday I've had.

The best advert ever

The Trip

I love camping.

Great forum thumbup

Mercedes GL420CDI and a Spinifex caravan.

The perfect Go-Anywhere get-up in style.

Sounds great thumbup
I'd love a camper one day, will have to make do with the tent for a bit longer.
