I've followed some bikers with wide panniers and spent most of the time thinking ' feck 'me that was close! [i.e. close to the vehicles they were filtering past]. But I have also been held up more than once to it kinda balances out I guess.

They can be a right pain in the arse when your trying to change filtering 'lanes' to turn right or similar.

What do commuters carry that means they need a pair of 50 litre panniers on thier bike? I've got a pair of Givi E21's that make the back of the bike about the same width as the handlebars or my knees, and take everything I need to carry.

Maybe they are stupid like me & thought E41s would be a lot smaller than they turned out to be? I'd have probably got E21s if I'd been able physically see the size before buying.

Give me the Honda 125cc of a pizza delivery boy (minus the pizza box) and I'll be in the office before I even leave home.

Perhaps only scooter riders are stupid enough to think that filtering "fast" is a great idea?

Fast as in overall distance travelled in overall time taken, not fast as in fast past the cars. The superior filterer continues progress while the pizza delivery boys jam themselves up among Routemasters and Boris bikes.

The mirrors on my Pan Euro are a fair bit wider than the panniers. I have been held up when filtering by sports bikes before. I have also clipped things with my mirrors before but, unlike sports bikes with their mirrors on lanky alloy stalks, my mirror pods are plastic and simply unclip themselves, creating another two inches of clearance and dangling on their straps until I can clip them back on again.

Mmm, same bike, but when the clearance gets really small, I duck paddle the bike so as yet I've never clipped anything on the Pan. The problem with the Pan, I find, is that compared with smaller bikes with the usual mirrors on stalks you can lean the bike while duck paddling to create extra clearance on one side as required, but the Pan is a wide bike overall and heavy, so I have less success doing this. Often this can be the difference between making it to the head of the queue and being stuck a few cars back. OTOH when filtering moving traffic, Pan European + white helmet + high viz jacket makes me look like a copper to a lot of motorists, so gaps create themselves anyway.

Superb turning circle also mean you never get stuck as you can do 90 degree left or rights between cars bumpers to find better gaps. When the traffic snarls up, they are unbeatable.

Mines a ST11, but I've found you can crank the bike right over while going straight to the point I'm sitting on the edge of the seat & get enough lean so one mirror goes over car mirrors & the other under. I've got a tendency to do this when getting to/from work lately. T'is funny to stick a Pan through a gap & watch the spurtsbike behind stop & bottle the gap.

Given how wide that approach would make your bike. Wouldnt it just be easier to ride upright through the gap between the cars

The mirrors are huge so dropping one a few inches & lifting the other gains just enough for gaps it wouldn't quite fit through. Tbh most of the times it's just to clear one mirror when a van or something is the other side, but it does work. Mainly though the trick around here is to time it so your not passing two mirrors at once.
