well im seriously looking for used boxster around 2000 MY was sold on a 2.7 (drove one and really liked it). however from specialists a decent spec 2.7 is c.25k, for 2-3k more i could get a 3.2 S do you guys think its worth the bit extra (means bit larger loan) insurance diff was less than £100.

Yes the S is worth every penny of the extra you spend on it.

By a country mile.

Better brakes. More go. More toys as standard.

Definitely recommend the S, although admittedly I've never tried the 2.7!

I've a 2.7 and have toyed with the idea of an S, but after a couple of test drives remain unconvinced it's worth the additional outlay. The extra power, and the extra cog with which to exploit it, is enticing though!

Found myself in a similar situation a few years ago with the TT....180 or 225bhp, went for the 180 and regretted it.

No such problems with the Boxster purchase, it had to be the "S".
If you don't buy the S you'll only hanker after those extra horse's...and they do make you smile!

thanks for the replys. ive pretty much convinced myself i need those extra bhp! it means a bit more in terms of initial outlay but im hoping the S is worth it. any ideas how much more running costs are? petrol/servicing particularly?

On the subjest of which one to chose, it's down to you. Drive both. I think 3 grand extra for the S is worth it, but my mate bought a 2.7 and he doesn't agree. I like the big brakes on my S though, tasty red callipers, you don't get them on the 2.7. I don't think the 6 speeds make much difference though. It's not as if Porsche took the opportunity to stack the gear more tightly and lower.....the car is still very high geared.

In my S I get 23 MPG around town and 30 MPG on the motorway.

Servicing is pretty cheap for a car of such class. Even the OPC's prices aren't too bad. Give them a ring for an idea of the cost of each service. Tyres cost about £140 each, but Michelins can cost more.
