Back on it after a 4 week hiatus, 2 weeks holiday and 2 weeks where I needed the car.

Didn't notice it being any harder. Lovely morning if a bit chilly.

Planning on every day next week.

I was wondering on my way in this morning if you were still riding (and eating loads wink)

I always wonder when reading this thread, what your commutes actually involve.
We always talk breakfast, near misses and weather but where/what are these commutes we all do?
Thought it might be fun to share.

Mine:
7.5 miles each way
Mostly cycle paths/off road into central Milton Keynes
On a knackered 16-year old Giant mountain bike
Takes about 35-40 minutes

Edited by v15ben on Tuesday 23 June 09:10
Missed this 1st time round so thought I'd add my 2p
6.5 miles each way from North Manchester to City Centre near Manchester Picadilly.
Choice of Roads, but road riding all the way.
Choice of bikes - 10 year old Trek Hardtail in excellent condition and a 2015 Scott Speedster 30 road bike with an aluminium frame and carbon fork.
Either takes 25 or 20 mins in depending on the bike and 25 or 30 mins back depending on bike (downhill in, uphill back).
Sometimes divert round Oldham and Ashton to turn it into an 18 mile run each way

Nightmasre hectic few weeks. Bought a pair of skinny fit Gant cords in bright yellow which would be a little more comfy with a bit more room in them! Eased right off the carbs...

11.3 miles each way for me, from Bracknell to Egham, via Ascot. Slightly more downhill on the way, so usually 19+mph average going, then ~16-17mph average on the way home.
All road, with the only bit I don't like being the A329 going past Virgina Water, as its a 50/60mph road, dark, but with the low sun filtering through the trees right into drivers eyes at the time of year.
Always done on my Boardman Pro Carbon road bike.
Try to do it twice a week depending on logistical issues.

Eh?

I ride more than most, in most weathers, and have never spent 80-100quid on a jersey.
Neither have I. The only Gore long sleeve I own was £35 from Evans in the sale. I own a number of DHB winter and summer jerseys and IMO they are no where near as nice as the Gore Jersey, especially some of the older ones.

Good ride both ways today. Opted for a base layer on the way in (as it was 5 degrees) plus my normal shorts and tshirt, but I was way too hot when I got to work. I need a middle ground.

7.78kms each way or 12.25 on the way home if I have time to take 'the long way'
Mixed road / shared paths through suburban Peterborough
I aim to average 32.5kph but it largely depends on wind speed/direction, traffic and traffic lights...
Now have three bikes to choose from depending on mood/weather
Genuinely depresses me if I have to take the car now!

I think the same about my girlfriend.
As for the 'choon, shamelessly stolen from Breaking Bad, from a similar scene that's also sped up as they follow Jesse on his daily drug smuggling activities.

Roughly 10-12 km for me, depending which route I take, across the city of Calgary. I mostly just follow the river on my MTB, with about 1 km on the roads at either end to connect my destinations to the river pathway network, so it's pretty flat apart from a short climb up to the office, which is at the top of one of the few hills.

there was naff all in there, looks like the bearings had one side dipped in grease and stuck to races and then assembled.

now the jobs a good un, well packed and..............it still grumbles a bit, this wheels going back, something is amiss.

PB on the way into work for me, a combination of running late & not going through the woods (distance is the same).

Then after work we had the first outing for our Friday afternoon MTB club.

they're resurfacing a road that i use regularly in my area. heading down the hill i stayed in the cycle lane they painted on the road. as the road levelled out and it passed a side road on the left the cycle lane mereged straight into a cycle lane on the pavement, I didn't even notice until it was time for me to turn right into another road. I had to stop and get off the pavement, get back onto the road so i could turn right. terrible design.

since i noticed it i completely ignore that cycle lane now and stay on the road as normal.

I did probably 15,000 miles on my last two pairs of Gatorskins with two (related) punctures that whole time. Thought I'd have a change and bought Schwalbe Ones on Thursday - this was their first ride out and they lasted just 55 miles before exploding.
I managed to get a big gash in the side of a Conti GP4000 a few months ago. Hardly used...

I'm going to buy a pair of 28mm Gatorskins for my unlit lanes winter commuting duties. I had a pair a few years ago and they were excellent.
The reason I thought I would change from the Gatorskins is that I find them hugely difficult to get on and off. I didn't want to be stranded with broken tyre levers and dislocated thumbs - I hadn't realised the alternative was even worse.
Lovely ride in this last week. On the way home, with my newly installed replacement Schwalbe One on the back, I get a flat. Looking at the tyre, there's a big lump missing from the main contact strip - like I've done an emergency stop and locked up the back wheel. Except I haven't.

Balls - that's two Schwalbe One's trashed in less than 200 miles. Either I've been very unlucky or they are utterly st tyres - I don't feel I can trust them any more. I'm going to go back to Gatorskins and dislocated thumbs. frown At least I get to my destination reliably. smile

Certainly windy in this morning. Legs felt a bit tired after Saturdays 81 miles and 20 miles yesterday but still took a small detour to make 20 miles and 1050ft climb 23 miles and 1350ft climb. 17.6mph average.

Some science in sport REGO recovery when I got here as I feel a bit worse for wear!
