So, this comes up at leat 4 times a year (maybe more). A sticky Wiki is in order I reckon.....edit as you see fit. Admin - if it gets a few entries can it be made sticky?

Dave_s13 Sebo x4 Pet 2009 Does what it says on the tin - generally excellent - needs a new brush after 3 years but they are cheap - still going strong after 5 years hard abuse YES
Schtu Numatic Henry 1999 Indestructible, can cope with anything from general cleaning to builder's waste. No gizmos or gadgets, required no repairs. YES
944fan Miele Cat & Dog Upright 2012 Very powerful and suprisingly quiet. Turbo brush attachment is good for getting hair off sofas etc. YES
Johnnytheboy Sebo Felix Pet 2012 Lightweight for an upright, very powerful. Downside: a bit unstable Yes
Mojooo Miele S2111 2012 Very easy to manouvre, powerful. Slot for holding up hose when not in use. Cost £120. Chose over Henry vac. Only downside is attachments are not onboard and bags may cost more than others. Yes
Deluded Numatic James 2009 Aquired from a previous workplace when they got a new one. Aleast 10 years old. Deals with anything. Super reliable. Replacement parts are very cheap too (only replaced the head and extention arms because of wear). Original internals are showing no signs of giving up. Yes
Chrisgr31 Miele Cat & Dog Upright 2010 Replaces a Vax which I hated after the Vax fell down the stairs! Its fantastic & I note that my wife who said she would never use it as its too heavy, now uses it in preference to the Hoover Cat & Dog Cycleinder bought at the same time. Yes it is heavy but just does an excellent job. Yes
Beko1987 Miele S5 Cylinder 2011 Picked it up from freecycle with a broken motor. Fixed the thermal cutout and refurbished it. Very powerful with the air powered turbobrush, bags last a decent while. Yes
Beko1987 Dyson DC04 (Marie Curie Special Edition 2013 Bought from ebay 'dead'. Chopping an inch off the cable where it enters the machine fixed it. Gave it a full refurb and it's back to new. DC04's are the ford transit of dysons, a nice refurbished one will last for another 10 years. Plastics can be a bit brittle now on the older ones but parts still readily available. Same motor as the DC07and 14 (YDK). Some have Amtek units in Yes
Beko1987 Hoover Turbopower Plus Total System (U2602) 2005 My first Turbopower, came from Freecycle. Excelletn at deep cleaning a carpet and restoring the pile. Pulls an astonishing amount of grit from anything. Tool suction is a bit rubbish as they all were, but for carpets it's excellent. Can be a bit heavy, and all will need a new belt nowadays if buying second hand. Motor bearings are still available, and brushroll bearings can be split and re-greased. Activators are still available too. Yes
Beko1987 Vax Turboforce 1700 2013 Found it at the side of the road. Came up really well after a stripdown, filters are cheap. However the body is made from cheese, one rear wheel shattered away from the chassis in use (wasnt like it before). Filters clog up quickly and look like st afterwards. Very loud. Did do well though whilst it worked. Glued it back together and flogged it for a tenner! No
Beko1987 Vax Any modern one ?? The problem with modern vaxes, cheap as they are is they are poorly built and badly designed. The cyclone unit is designed as a dirt cup, rather than a proper cyclone so when it gets full, it sucks it all back up and onto the motor filter, which overheats the motor and kills it. Sharp edges and things sticking into the airway catches hair, which clogs it deep down, overheats it and kills it. Spares are avaialble for about 2 weeks from vax, when they then render it obselete. The brushrolls on uprights can be soft, and buying belts can be a pain in the arse. If you want cyclone and bagless, unfortunatly Dyson are hard to beat! No
Dr Interceptor Numatic Henry 2011 Does what it says on the tin. Never goes wrong, just works every time. Hepa-Flo bags are easy to change and provide good filtration. One tip, search out the NRV200-22, it's the commercial version of the Henry, has a 12.5m lead instead of the Henrys 10m one, and is cheaper to buy too. Yes
Silver940 Sebo Felix (3 of them) 2008-12 Wife has 3 of these for her cleaning business and one at home. They do more work in a week than many doing in a month or more. Cables seem to break near the handle but other than that they wear very well. Parts easily available right down to motor brushes. very good customer service too. great handling but only complaint would be unstable when using the hose. Everyone that has borrowed one has gone on to buy one Yes
