The EU has ruled that employers will have to recompense workers who fall ill during their holidays.

It's no wonder that Europe is going bankrupt.

It's always been the case where I work. If you're taken ill during your holiday and you have a note from the GP/Hospital you can claim back your leave days.

Yep, same here: resident of a financially viable, solvent Eurozone country. tongue out

You're right, no wonder at all. Even as the EU flushes itself down the sewer it has been relentlessly constructing over decades, it keeps digging..

Do you think that this is reasonable?

Always been the case at places I work too - I've never had to do it but holiday could be claimed back if you've got a doctor's note.

That sounds like the most retarded thing in the world.

I can understand it even if it seems mad. When you go in holiday you're paid holiday pay, so in effect your employer is employing you to take a break so if you're ill it stands to reason that you will be able to 'go sick' during that time.

Of course it works both ways in that in this country you would be required to produce a sick note after a set time and I guess an employer could then put you on Statutory Sick Pay which is a standard rate and usually a lot less than your holiday pay.

If you are off sick from work and then holiday starts? Same thing.

If you are off sick just so you can go to Magaluf? You get sacked.

The up side is that there is no statutory requirement to pay any sick time in the UK.
So the best that can be hoped for is leave without pay.

Broke my leg in the '70s and was off work for four months - it wouldn't knit without some surgical 'help'.

Was very surprised when I returned and the company (financial institution but not a bank) insisted my holiday entitlement still stood.

Yes.

Tbh I'd assumed it was normal practise as presumably most organisations let you cancel time off if you need to.

That's fine - , just be careful you don't get pregnant or you'll have to claim maternity leave as well.

One more liability which makes employers reluctant to engage permanent staff...
