The 1981 Audi Quartz concept by Pininfarina cleverly repackaged a number of years later and flogged to Alfa as the GTV
That was my first thought! Stick a bit of a tail on it, and the Alfa grille, and you've got a GTV! Perhaps a design that was far ahead of its time...

Was along side one of these in traffic this morning. Its the size of an Insignia, which at first glance I thought it was, even once it had pulled ahead of me I was surprised it wasn't an Insignia.

I think its a lovely looking car and with another badge on would be far more successful.
But it doesn't, and also you just know it's a fat lump of crap.
hehe I hadn't spotted that!

I always thought the 280SE was the smallest engine you could get in the W126, seems the 260 was sold in the later years? Anyone know much about it, hp wise or why they decided to produce it in the first place?

It also came with a 5 speed manual as an option!
2.6 was a newer fuel injected engine, from the W124, with slightly more power than the carb'd 2.8

probably as a bottom-of-the-range replacement for emissions reasons, I reckon
When the W126 was launched you could get the carb 280S, 4 sp manual, (never imported to the UK) or the injected 280SE (and lwb SEL, again not imported here).

Here's a 280S with a 4 sp box and not even a rev counter, also note keep fit rear windows.

http://www.ruylclassics.nl/mercedes10_eng.htm

When the range was facelifted, the 280 injected engine was replaced with the 300 previously seen in the W124 which was the entry level in the UK, the 300SE, though this time I believe, the lwb 300SEL was imported here. However the previous 280S was replaced by the 260SE as the rest of the world entry level but was never imported here.

The real catch though is the 560 SE. Mighty 5.6 engine in the swb body. 1,200 made out of a total production run of nearly 1m cars.

Brilliant info! clap

I wonder how much weight was saved in the SWB 560SE over the SEL scratchchin

Have they moved the front axle forward? Obviously it used to be an MX-5 but the proportions look different. Mini headlights too, à la Morgan Aero 8.

Mitsuoka's terrible work I assume?

But wait: "you do get Bluetooth, cruise control, heated leather seats and climate control for your money. Sat-nav's an option"

You mean, everything that's on the MX5 already?

I followed a 'Foton Tunland' down the road yesterday. Basically a Chinese copy of a Hilux.

I like looking at what Ford come up with in other parts of the globe:

It's a Capri! In Australia, anyway.

The Ford Festiva, jointly developed with Kia.

I really like this one, the Ford Courier, a Fiesta pick-up.
