Out for a bit of a blat in my 993 on one of our warmer evenings this week and sucessfully caused the OBC to go mental. Don't know if nailing a 993 usually has this effect but the little display in the tacho started to flash and randomly display different segments of the LCD.

I was absolutely thrashing the car in 2nd when this happened.

Couldn't find Control-Alt-Delete so decided to stop and restart the engine. The display behaved for a couple of mins then went nuts again when I drove off.

Ray Northway (v. helpful)seems to think its the rev counter bit of the OBC that has got a bit confused when I rang him for advice.

The parts cost is £347 plus VAT for an OBC tacho unit, but before I order one (5 days from Germany) is their anything else I should try?

It could be a dodgy connection so I will whip off airbag/steering wheel etc this weekend to get the tacho out.

Any thoughts on other things I should consider?

Personally I'd try a real control-alt-delete and disconnect the battery briefly.

Never had this issue on my porker, but the rev-counter/computer on my Golf has gone loopy in the past and was "fixed" when the battery was disconnected and then reconnected. No idea why .

Best of luck.

Edited to add - make sure you have your radio code and remember the Porsche advice to let the engine idle for a few minutes while the ECU re-establishes its settings.

Nel,

Disconnected the battery last night to run down the airbag firing capacitor with an air to removing the tacho today.

Found my Torx sockets were too short to get the airbag out and I really couldn't be bothered to go and buy more.

So... I reconnected the battery just to see what would happen.

Went out in car, raised hell, and the OBC is still working fine.

If this isn't an intermittent fault (glass half empty), you just saved me £400.

I owe you major beers...

Cheers,

Ian D
