Hi all,

Im sure Ive seen two bhp figures quoted for the Audi 3 litre diesel engine but didnt know if both of these ever made it into the A5, or whether the lower rated motor was perhaps fitted in A4's.

Maybe a daft question but are all the A5 3.0tdi's 240bhp, or were some lower rated? If there were two differently rated 3 litre engines, how visually would you tell them apart?

Thanks

Marty

237BHP/240PS from launch for the A5; earlier 3.0 litre diesels were available with lower power outputs but never in the A5.

In Belgium and Germany, a 155 kW/211 bhp version also exists for tax reasons, but suppose this is not a UK model.

If it a 240 bhp with six-speed box and no stop-start - take it to Revo

Then it will be 285bhp

I have read with interest the other thread on this forum about re-maps and the choice between Blufin and Revo. Interesting stuff.

Was there ever an Audi sanctioned remap for these cars?

Audi UK have never sanctioned anything but ABT have a factory agreement on the continent. Loads of dealers offer remaps on the quiet though.

A5s (either man or tip) are a lot of fun with Revo software on, properly pick their heels up. The extra power doesn't seem to cause any reliability problems either.

Get the remap.

I have an older A6 with the slighly less powerful 225bhp engine.

A remap brought this up to 276bhp, 3 and a half years later, no problems from any mechanical bits.

Safe as houses.

Thats good to know. How many miles have you put on it in this time and does it run as sweetly as std or does it have more of a peaky or narrower powerband?

Marty

my wife's S3 has the Revo stage one - has been fine - only proviso for Petrols is you must use 97/98/99 octane fuel

I had my old 57-plate Q7 3.0 TDi done by them as well - 50000 miles in two years with no problems on regular diesel. The remap gave me about 285 bhp but more to the point nearly as much torque as the V8 TDi 4.2.

That is the same engine as yours, I believe - they do not have an upgrade for the newer(from 2010) stop-start engine yet, but if yours is the older 6-speeder - get it done - it is well worth it - the fact that the MPG remains the same is a bonus too.

I've put 66,000 miles on since the remap, power is smooth and progressive all the way through the rev range. Power before the remap (from what I can remember) was a bit peaky lower down the range before running out of juice higher up.

Spot on, that's my favourite bit of the Revo map; when you're pressing on the car feels like it's actually working hard up in the revs. Standard map just gives up at 3.5k and you might as well be in a higher gear.

Thanks all for the info. Its a bit more reassuring to know that others have run these long term without any problems. Its really easy to get a car to go really quick for a very short time (before it goes bang), the art is to get it to do so over a number of years.

I've only just picked the A5 up this afternoon and I am pretty impressed with the build quality and the way it takes off. Apart from my previous car, I have only ever had petrol engined cars, but I am totally won over by the torque that big diesels produce, and I am getting not far off double the MPG from a diesel travelling on the same roads at the same speeds.

I even managed to have a play with a new looking Merc S350 this evening. I was sat in a line of traffic in the outside lane of the motorway waiting for it to thin out and it came bounding up behind me, all foglights and aggression and proceeded to sit on my rear bumper. However when the traffic cleared and I could clog it, mr M.Benz couldnt keep up. byebye Made me chuckle.

Once Ive got a few miles on it I'll definately be looking at a remap

Cheers

Marty

In modern traffic and driving conditions turbodiesels really are the best way to go - petrol engines are generally much better for track days and other motorsport, and to some extent in lightweight minicars(micra etc), but with the heavy weight of most cars nowadays and safe overtaking, comfortable cruising, etc being paramount, the Tdi in its various forms is the best bet - IMHO.

Since last year, the A5 has been available with a lower powered 204 BHP TDI engine, as has the A6. From Launch it was 237 BHP. I believe the higher powered model is now a little higher at 245.

Not sure I entirely agree that turbo diesels are the only way to go, but with cars being so heavy, yes you do need plenty of torque. Whether you get that via a TDI or a TSI or something, is down to choice and how many miles you do!

An A5 TDI 3.0 is a nice car however, high on my shopping list for my next car!!

You can get the 204 bhp 3.0 tdi engine in the A6 - front drive only - no quattro - I think that's the case with the A5.

My A6 Avant has the new BiTurbo Tdi 3.0 - over 300bhp and nearly 500lbs/ft of torque. Currently only available on the A6 and A7, but my Audi dealer tells me there are plans to put it into the A5 when RS5 production stops.

That should be something!
