I'm a very light sleeper and have discovered that earplugs really help. However, someone told me that this could be a bad move as wax is meant to constantly leak out of the ears. Any truth in that?

My wife wears them all the time, I wouldn't worry.
I wear them when we run out of KY, again, no worries.

I've been wearing them for the best part of a decade now. No obvious problems.

It might depend on the type you use. I just use the 3M foam disposable ones and change them now and then.
They're foam / porous I guess so might.err..have some absorption. That sounds very wrong.

I've been using them for a year and a half now and have had to have my ears syringed once. I recently moved into a house with a large tree right outside my bedroom window and was getting woken up by the dawn chorus every morning at 4:30 I use these ones, they seem perfect for the job. http://www.britishsnoring.co.uk/shop/snore_calm_fo...

These are 'designed' for sleeping: click. Thankfully not too much of an issue for me, the hearing in my left ear is pretty poor so just sleep on my right side. All is quiet.

Top tip: Save energy by removing smoke alarm batteries when wearing earplugs to bed.
The contents of this post are entirely intended for semi humorous purposes, no actual safety advice should be inferred.

Any truth in that? Is the person who told you this medically trained in any way? Thought not. I wear earplugs on my motorcycle and sometimes when sleeping. I find that they keep my ears cleaner as the wax sticks to them and is extracted.

No, no med training, I've used plugs in bikes for years too but not for eight hours at a time. I'd agree with you that plugged lugs do seem cleaner in the morning.

Nothing personal but why are people who spout this kind of unfounded guessery given any creedence? Would you have come on here and asked the same kind of question if they'd told you that ear wax is made from congealed excess brain fluid?

Seems a bit bonkers to get quite so exercised about it. We agree that wax is produced and has to go somewhere. The bit of knowledge I was missing was the rate of production and any possible long-term ramifications of blocking the flow for 8 hours at a time. Not being an ear expert myself I felt the question was worth asking. Sorry that it's upset you.

I avoid the foam ones as i ended up with some ear infections. I use the Boot's "Muffles" wax earplugs.
Only problem is that sleeping without them becomes even more of a problem after a while.
