kambites said: Interesting question - will the people who do 80 now continue to do 80 if the limit is raised, or will they start doing 90 instead. My feeling is that the latter is more likely. I believe that drivers have been doing 80mph for so long that the vast majority of them will continue to do so because that is what they are used to we already see a few drivers doing well in excess of 80mph and they will continue to do so because they don't care about anyone else. The contributor who stated earlier that speed does not equate to dangerous driving is quite right, I hate those sighs that say please drive slowly, ok then I'll drive at 20mph along the pavement, it's still slow, all that is needed is common sense and consideration for other people and for some drivers to learn to use their mirrors.

Well said. I see you are new to P/H. After a while you'll find that tailgating / mobile phone use / speeding is considered to be OK by a large number of members. That is a very real shame. I'd have thought/hoped that people who care about driving/cars as much as those on here do would be those most likely to take driving seriously and try to do it safely...

It is "GO FASTER!" and "I AM A DRIVING GOD!!" in response to a series of quote attributed to an ex F1 racer who they interpret as suggesting they should be made to go slower. I don't think many actually read the article.

Sorry, I've just re-read the article and I still think he's talking rubbish. article said: he hardly ever drives above 70mph because "it's too stressful". The least stressful pace - at least if you observe proper lane discipline - is either matching that of the lorries or above that of the muppets hogging lane 2 - which is often above 70. article said: Most people aren't safe to drive over 55 Our motorways are very safe, both relative to other roads in the UK and relative to other roads abroad, despite the vast majority of people driving at well over 55mph. It's just hyperbole and snobbery. Driving a car safely on a motorway at 80mph is a task within the grasp of any adult who has reasonable motor skills and is not educationally subnormal.

You expect him to say "hey, I drive at 85 mph because it's the least stressful!" Nice one. He is a public figure. I'm sure that would go down well. So the choice is travelling at the same speed the MLM's, the lane swappers, the folks without indicators, the phantom breakers, and so on... Hence 'driving standards' being an issue.

I didn't like him when he was an F1 driver.
I still don't like him.

I still don't like him. Which has nothing to do with the subject at hand. You go in the 'pointless' pile.

I don't know what all the pissing and whining is about anyway.
Personally when I'm on the motorway, I sit at around 60-65...but I'd rather not piss money away on the monotony that is the motorway network

SturdyHSV said: The fact there are so few accidents as it is is pretty miraculous. It's not miraculous at all. To me it's pretty good evidence that the standard of driving is not as poor as many make out. I haven't read the whole thread as it would take some time however Damon Hill is wrong, IMHO. People already drive at 80 mph without any problems. Our motorway network is one of the safest in the world and we have an enviably low fatality rate. Allowing people to do legally what they already do now would change little if anything. All this rubbish about declinding standards etc is as far as I am aware based on little more than anecdotes. Fatality rates are falling as are accident rates as far as I am aware. Can someone please explain how this could be the case if standards were low and or declining?

Use fatalities statistics as your yardstick if you wish to delude yourself. Serious injuries, paralysis, loss of limbs, eyesight and other nasties are not included in that total thus creating a false impression of how safe things are on our roads. Anyway, I do not have to drive as safely as other folks as all my car's gizmos will always see me safe. My car has more stars than yourn too ... so there. Statistics are on my side.. KERRRRRUNCH... .

The comments about safety statistics also apply to KSI (killed or seriously injured).

Kawasicki said: First off the stats show that UK motorways are safer than those in other countries. Do you agree with that? I agree the statistics show the fatality rate on our motorways to be very low. I also agree the statistics show the motorway to be very dense. However none of that explains why we should raise the speed limit. To look at the stat of a low death rate and conclude it's ok to raise the speed limit really is a massive leap, you need to go far more in depth than that in order to declare raising the speed limit is a good idea. That's the sort of bogus analysis of statistics which drives scientists up the wall.

Thats how i read it Yep he has had the thrill of driving a F1 car and he doesn't want us to have the utter thrill of driving at 80mph a motorway which is probably the most thrilling thing you could ever do in a car. Sod trackdays and racing the real thrill is sat at cruise control at 80mph
