I've decided I had a Jaguar sized itch I need to scratch. I will be spending somewhere in the region of £1000 - £1500 and have noticed for this money all 3 of the above models are available. An older XJR has a somewhat classic appeal and the interiors look very nice. The S-Types I like but the condition of the ones available don't seem as good as the XJR's. I really don't know about the X-Type's, I'm looking for something wafty and preferably an auto but I can't see this fitting the bill. They do look nice though and I would consider one (more so if it was an auto).
I know I will probably have to drive all 3 to decide but could do with knowing what to look out for, common faults etc. My driving mainly consists of a 34 mile commute into a city so I know I should be looking at some bland diesel eurobox but fuel isn't so much of an issue (within reason).
Any tips, advice for a wannabe Jag owner are appreciated!

The auto box in the X-type is not the favoured option. I have a manual 3.0 (a great engine and better than the 2.5) and while it's a very comfy and capable car it's not a majestic waft mobile in the sense of an S or an XJ. At your budget the 3.0 X is likely to be a bit worn unless you spot a gem (they are out there), but get up to £2k and consider a manual for a lot of car for the money. General running costs are low, all Mondeo service parts. Only real weak points are the transfer box (AWD) and prop shaft. Tin worm up under the sill covers can be bad on some. Mine was minor surface rust at 10yrs. Any 10yr old car is going to be getting tired in the suspension and bushes department so expect things to need spending there. I'm just starting on mine. A 3.0 manual will give low 20s MPG in town and if you're gentle with the loud pedal and cruise at about 65 you can get around 38-40mpg on a run. It's a lovely engine, free revving and quite playful. SE is softer set up than Sport. Look for leather, cruise, climate and electric seats. Some have elec sunroof and heated seats too. I bought mine because I can't fit an XJ where I need to! I came from a BMW 540 and no it's not up to that standard but I really am very happy with it after nearly 2 years

Hi there I own and use my XJR X308 as a daily drive doing around 25miles a day 7 days a week and that costs around £60 to £70 per week in fuel depending on my right foot lol
But saying that I would not be with out her as the smile i have on my face most days is worth the expense
As already mentioned bushes on these are a common fault with age so check for knocking on the rear ...rust around the arches is also common...but the main thing with the older V8's is to make sure the tensioners on the cam chain have been done other wise you will be looking at a very expensive fix ...
keep us posted as to how you get on and what you decide to buy ...and good luck
Phil
