This is exactly why I hate f king computers, waste of time the lot of them. Just had my MP3 player sat in one of my USB ports charging and updating with music... took it out to go for a long ride and forgot a song, so plugged it back in to add the song and now I can't get the device to even be recognised by the PC. Tried EVERYTHING, nothing. Both front USB ports appear dead, device just sits in each port and does not connect at all. PC doesn't say there is anything in them. Load of rubbish. So now it won't even charge let alone update music. Why the f k does stuff like this still go on? Aren't we past these pathetic issues with PC's nowadays?

Have you tried another USB device in the PC first, to see if it is the device itself?
If you have, then your next step is likely to look in Disk Utility (Mac) or Disk Management(?) (Windows). See if it appears in there when it's plugged in.
If it appears under Disk Utility/Management, it may be that the drive inside is faulty, or perhaps has become corrupt. If it's become corrupt, you may be able to repair it within the utility.
Failing that, no idea.

Do you have any USB ports on the rear that you could try?

I have 2 on the front both don't pick it up anymore and also tried the back. Its not the ports, they work with everything else. The PC now refuses to even see the MP3, it won't recognise it, won't charge it, nothing.
How is this even allowed to happen? Totally ridiculous, it's been charging all morning!

Pulse said: Have you tried another USB device in the PC first, to see if it is the device itself? This first, always try the simple things first. Then try another cable. Next turn off (not re-boot) the pc, leave it a minute and while waiting for the pc to load up, turn off the mp3 player and back on again before plugging it back in again. Only after that start messing about with settings on either device.

Seriously, turn it off and turn it on again.
Invariably, always the first thing to try before 'fixing' something that ain't broke.

Did you eject the device properly before you unplugged it? Try plugging another USB device in and see if that is recognised, a USB stick or similar. That will tell you if the ports are good.

All been done, everything turned off and on as per usual, I've been using the MP3 for a year with this PC.
Now it is just dead. It turns on fine and works fine, but no longer links to the computer, it won't even gain a connection to charge.
USB port is fine, just plugged my camera in to test it, no problems. Doesnt make any sense.

Reset the mp3 player with a pin bearing in mind data may get wiped. I had the same with a sony mp3 once and that cured!

Make sure it works on another PC so your not wasting time if you can.
Plug in and go in to device manager and find the device - it will be there may be unknown device. Uninstall the device. Unplug. Reboot. Plug it in.
Tada.

Never installed a driver for the device.
No pin hole to reset.
When I plug it in I check My Computer but it is invisible, like it has not been plugged in at all...

Device manager says all is as should be, no sign of my MP3 player.
In any case, plugging it in instantly starts a charge, even this is not happening.

You can delete everything under the USB tab in device manager, restart the computer and it will re-detect and install everything.

Have you got any other usb devices plugged in? If so unplug ALL of them, reboot and try the mp3 again.

Try plugging it into a different computer? Or a mac if it still isn't recognized!

bungle. said: Try plugging it into a different computer? Or a mac if it still isn't recognized! This. It sounds like the device itself (or the USB cable for it) are faulty.
