No cable for the USB as it is just a pop out and click!

It's obviously the device itself. Flash memory still isn't massively reliable.

Have you tried it in another PC or a Mac?

Did you eject the device before you unplugged it?

How is this even allowed to happen? Totally ridiculous, it's been charging all morning!

Did you remember to use the safely remove usb function, when you removed the mp3 player in the past?

If you write stuff to a device the system may not have completed everything until you metaphorically kick it up the rear by the safely remove usb function.

A few months ago a colleague plugged and unplugged his iPod into my PC without using the safely remove usb function and screwed up the usb drivers on the system.

I believe Sunbeam Alpine is right here. Sometimes a USB device will leave the 'connection' open when it is removed. You will find it works in other machines and that other USB devices work in your machine.
You will need to remove all USB devices in Device Manager and restart - had to do this a few times at work is solves it everytime.

No, you're not supposed to do that.

Not sure what else I am supposed to do, can;t eject or do anything other than simply take it out. Never caused an issue before.

As for device manager I can get in there but can't see how to reset anything...

I'm surprised you've never had a warning. Are you using Windows? If so, there should be this in your system tray.

I can only hope this may be a case of 'obvious troll is obvious'!

If the device was still being recognised by the PC, then you would have been able to eject it by right-clicking on its drive letter in Explorer/My Computer/other file system navigator of choice and selecting the eject option from the pop-up menu - there might not be a physical eject mechanism, but there is still an eject procedure that needs to be followed... Failing to do this, and instead simply yanking the devive out of the USB socket without giving the OS any warning that it's about to get disconnected, is sooner or later going to give you grief even if you wait for any activity indications to cease.

There's also a relatively common failure mode on USB devices that plug directly into a USB port rather than connect via a cable, which would give the symptoms you're seeing. Repeated stresses on the USB plug during plugging/unplugging can cause one or more of the solder joints between connector and device PCB to break. Depending on where the break is, the device may still charge OK but not be recognised/be accessible, or it may do nothing at all. Usually a simple fix if you've got a soldering iron and can get inside the casing.

What is the make/model of the device? Is it the type where the USB connector slides out?

Pulse, never seen anything like the logo you have pictured, never used anything like that for any USB since I started using computers 10 years ago.

Yes it is the slide and click mechanism. I have just tried it in a different USB port (this time my HTC phone charger) and it is knackered. It is around 5 years old so maybe it has served me well.

Off to Ebay to buy another now!

I've ordered a new MP3 player now but thought I would go into device manager and see what I could do. I have no idea what I am looking at or doing and no idea where to start.

If I start un-installing things or removing things I am going to cock up the PC.

I did a screen shot of what I can see this end anyway.

A bit further down on your screenshot you should see a tab USB devices (probably with a > next to it). Click on the > and you'll see all the USB devices. Delete them all by clicking on them and pressing del. You'll be asked to confirm each deletion.

Restart your PC.

It will automatically re-detect and reinstall USB devices.

Cant see why, it now would never have charge again or accepted any files etc so only had around an hours life left in it until battery ran out. Already ordered a slightly better model anyway off amazon.

Bought new MP3 player. It plugs in and charges from the PC but I can't see it anywhere on the PC so can't access it to modify any of the files. This doesn't make any sense. Im really getting to the end of my tether with it now, it is invisible on the PC.

I have looked at the above and can't understand what I am supposed to do, if I start uninstalling drivers and ports etc I am going to fk something up.

I don't have a USB list as such but I guess this is what you mean? Where do I start with this?
