Well, it's pretty simple.Cut the number of full-time employees, so you don't have to pay them to sit around doing nothing most of the time, but keep a lot of people in reserve who get paid pretty much sod-all, but sign up to be called up at short notice when it all goes tits-up.

I'd dispute the second half of that sentence, unless things have moved on since I left. As far as I am aware, you get paid regular rates of pay for the time you work, which was great for the odd week of annual camp etc, but there was a significant difference between that and my job, so the prospect of being shifted off to the former Yugoslavia didn't hold much appeal.As I understood it, they would make up the difference if it wasn't very much.

All the forces are still actively recruiting. The cuts did not affect the recruitment process according to my afco. I'm awaiting my date for the RN and as far as I'm aware everything is on schedule.

equally the regular forces are still recruiting as aside from the redundancies people are still leaving as normal at the various stepping off points ... some trades and branches will not be affected by these changes and some capabilities may move from regular to mixture of predominantly reservists - the defence medical services would be up poo creek without it's reservists, especially aeromed as 4626 is predominantly a reservist unit . there are other parts of the military which have mainly reservist units to provide specialist expertise which is honed by 'real life' experience outside the military, there is also a growth of PQOs outside the traditional healthcare. law and clergy triad...
the reserves is also seeing a change in how it is viewed by the big wigs, whether this will be reflected in the protections offered to reservists by beefing up the legislation is still to be seen ...
There's a drive to increase reserves, but not the support of infrastructure to accommodate them. They are looking to close TA units around the country if a decent offer is made for the facility, regardless of the viability of the unit. There will be soon less TA units available, which means the hoped increase in reservists won't occur because each area has a saturation point when it comes to recruitment. Another example of different departments at odds when it comes to strategic planning.

Yup, they are selling bases all over the country but, at the same time they are having to accomodate the BAOR, everything is in a state of flux. A basic training unit close to me is supposed to be closing in a couple of months to be converted to cater for a couple of Regiments, this will take a few years. The CO has not had any official documentation to tell him the dates or plan or pretty much anythingVieste said:

Not true. If you are on your routine training ie drill nights and weekends then its a pittance. If you are going on tour then you show them what you earn in your civvy job and they decide how much they will offer you (but it wont be less than a regular soldiers pay for that duration). There is no guarantee that they will match your civvy jobs pay.shouldbworking said:

I don't know why we don't judt have done with it and adopt the Swiss idea of a small standing army with very fancy uniforms, hold onto the gold of all the bad people so we have no threats. To occupy them get them to make really good knives to pay for it all. QED. Or something.
I personally really like this idea, as the Swiss get to keep their assault rifles at home. Can we really see that happening here, where I can't even own a target handgun?Sgt Bilko said:

would that be the TACs which sit empty for 120 + hours a week ?Tuesday evenings, a cadet unit unit on Wednesday evenings, a few hours on friday teat time and a few hours on Sunday afternoon do not justify the retention of a large, expensive premises ...
how many cities and large towns have multiple TACs which are only in any kind of significant use for a few hours on evenings and occasional weekends ... ?
by spreading out drill nights across the week and making best use of the best sites how many units could actually be accomodated in the better TACs
is HQ Sqn and RHQ of one unit , a platoon of another unit, two cadet units and a RFCA office really a good use of tens of acres of prime suburban real estate ? there's perhaps 15 people there in the day ( the regular component of the RHQ of that unit (CO, TM adj, Ch CLk, RSM and RQ and a few REME NRPS, HQ Sqn's PSI , no one from the platoon of the other unit , no one from cadets , a civvie gateman and caretaker and a couple of RFCA bods ... )
co locating Units tri- service and cadet forces and providing facilities for other organisations ( e.g. standby point for NHS ambos , secure parking for charities with a vehicle fleet ) is a realistic aim even without opening the facilities up to general community use ...
