Hi all first post on this fantastic forum!
At present I have a BMW f10 535d msport owned from new last year, 9000 miles on its still a lovely car but does it still excite me....no. My previous car to that was a V10 M5, Wonderful noise and driving experience but at the time 11 mpg and 450 a year road tax hurt so I chose the best diesel I could find hence the current car.

I'm now seriously in the market for a Vantage and could do with some advice off you guys if you can help.
The year Vantage I'm looking at is 2006 around 25000 miles with full main dealer history, it's priced at 37k from an independent specialist, good spec and immaculate condition. Is the price realistic in the current economic doom and gloom or should I haggle hard, I have checked Glasses guide and it retails at around 32k....are all Vantages over book price, because the dealer is definitely not offering over book price for my p/x! Lol
The other thing I'm considering is the residual value of the Aston, I have of course lost a lot of money in the BMW in 18 months, but that is to be expected..what are you feelings about roughly what the Vantage may loose in say 12 months, I know nobody has a crystal ball, but if any one has any suggestions it will be greatfully received.

if you sold your BMW privatly (which will not be difficult with that car) and purchased your Aston privatly you would probably save 5-8k on the whole package......if your buying from a dealer then expect to drop 5k as you leave the showroom perhaps less from an independant

The best piece of advise I can give you is don't be in a hurry.....you rushed into your BMW purchase which you are going to drop your pants on......there is always a better deal to be had somewhere next week

Agree with the above; cars loose money although how much the Vantage will loose over other marques is a huge mystery smile

I'm desperate to change my car now as I can feel the money burning a hole in my pocket, however, I know the spec I want and don't really need it before March/April time..... enjoy the chase!

It doesn't sound too bad as a dealer price - you could perhaps aim for £1-2k off, but you'd pay around £34k even privately for that age/miles.

As for resdiuals, it's hard to say. The V8V is in quite high demand and the prices of early ones haven't dropped much over the past couple of years - although they have fluctuated....prices had definitely dipped earlier in the year but have now improved again. I bought mine privately a couple of months ago at a time when prices seemed to be increasing and everything under £35k was getting snapped up!

Prices are seasonal you are in the peak now.
Don't buy an Aston if you are bothered by depreciation or MPG wink
At that mileage have a GOOD hard look at the clutch wink

Its called the summer rip off......dealers increase prices in spring by as much as 10% because they know that Astons are used more in the summer.....best time to buy an Aston (worse time to sell one) is about Nov/Dec

Yep - it was much more pronounced on Astons than I expected it to be though. On previous cars I haven't noticed that much seasonal difference despite an assumption that there would be one. I suspect it's because there are actually a lot of V8Vs around, so as soon as demand drops prices take a bit of a dive. Conversely, my last purchase was a Maserati 3200, of which there are only ever about 10 for sale on Pistonheads at any one time - in the winter the prices are maintained because although fewer people want one in the winter, there are also fewer selling!

To answer the OP question, I'd say depreciation is low (especially if you compare the same time of the year in successive years) - so buy if you want one and don't worry too much! With a 2006 car your depreciation is always going to be pretty low, relatively speaking. If buying a 2006 car with circa 30k miles you'd ideally want a recent clutch as suggested previously.

My experience is that there isn't anywhere near as much stock in the winter months. I am guessing that the AM dealers don't buy them in because they know they won't sell very quickly / won't make as big a margin.

I was getting desperate when looking for mine around December time. The very few roadsters that came on the market were getting snapped up quickly (again, only talking AM dealers here).

From my experience less stock but lower prices.

to the OP......after deciding to swap your BMW for an Aston it’s so easy to let your instant desire for a new car to rule your head......but it can be a very expensive mistake.......you will sell that BMW all day long privately....it's such a desirable car on the second hand market......if you offered cash for the 06 Aston you might get a couple of K off, which means they are really offering you even less for your BMW......dealers always want to make a profit at both end of a part X deal....that’s what there’re in business for.

I am after a N420 for about 60k (max budget), seen a few around this summer but 70k approx. Wondering if one would fall into the low 60's around Nov/Dec.

I would guess so - my old roadster did exactly that on an AM dealers forecourt last year.
The down side of that time of year is reduced availability, especially on something like an N420.
You may have to compromise and settle on the more common Sport Pack 4.7 which is essentially the same thing wink

How much did you get off the pice compared to summer?

Yes you're right might have to settle for a 4.7 Sport Pack but my preference would be the N420 so I can hear it growl more through the Sports Exhaust smile

How much did you get off the pice compared to summer?

Yes you're right might have to settle for a 4.7 Sport Pack but my preference would be the N420 so I can hear it growl more through the Sports Exhaust smile
I part exed it against an order for a new V8VSR in the May it finally sold in the October IIRC it went from £65k to £58k
Don't get hung up on the N420, it is not as limited as the N400 and is a 4.7 with ALL the options on and a few cosmetic tweaks.
For your budget I'd be buying an N400 and giving it to Bamford Rose for the GT4 4.7 conversion wink

Quite right.

I have a pal who is in business development at an LR dealership. Nothing makes him squeal with delight more than when he gets a victim hooked on finance. He was telling me over a beer that he generally makes very little, if anything 'on the chassis' as he put it, and relies upon finance commission, Superguard etc..

He was telling me about a chap recently who wanted a certain RR Sport who didn't care how much the sticker price was or how long he'd be repaying it as long as he could get it under £450 a month. The fact that he'll be repaying at 15.9% APR for a number of years didn't trouble him at all..

Back to the OP - until recently I owned an E60 M5 (19 mpg in mine) and currently still have a V12 DBS. The BMW and Aston are leagues apart, get behind the wheel and make your own mind up! The F10 535 looks like a super car, I am currently hankering for the new M5 but will do my usual trick of waiting for the week before Christmas to buy. I'm hoping a good spec car will be under £50k by then. Watch this space

The Aston is here to stay though wink

Lots of great advice from you all thanks, I definitely wouldn't rush into any kind of deal because like you all I just love to research, it took me 2 months just to spec the 535d! I'm really going to enjoy the chase and hopefully at the end I also will have a beautiful Vantage on the drive. Again thanks for your advice and congratulations on an excellent forum! smile
