Hi all
I am just about to have the afepower air filter and scoops fitted
+ full cat back exhaust fitted + a tune.
What do you think the power gains we be ?
And what would you do to get the best out the e60 m5.
Ie
pulleys
headers

To give you an idea Ive seen a car with BMC filters, RPI scoops, cat back exhaust (Hayward & Scott) and a DINAN tune....567 BHP at the fly at the last dyno.
Subjectively it felt quite a bit faster than the standard cars Ive driven at higher speeds, presumably as the ram air scoops are doing their thing!

I personally think the standard tune is the best you'll get with the V10 lump as far as value for money goes. Sure you can access more power by speaking to Evolve / DMS / DINAN etc and whacking scoops, headers and filters on but really, can you actually use the benefits?
Its not a cheap car to mod either. 567bhp as per Aero's car must have been achieved by the input of a lot of cash and maybe more items fitted than he's telling. Scoops might get you 7 to 10bhp on thier own (15bhp above 100mph). The exhust might add another 5 to 10bhp and the rest might well be good tuning but i reckon youd need pulleys and probably headers to get over 560bhp. The V10 engine in the E60/1 is already pretty well tuned from stock so all extra grunt has to be paid for.
Look at M5Marks old car. Circa 580bhp and i think he'd spent over £20k and driven a zillion cross-continent and rolling road miles to get there. The only thing he could have done to get more would be to fork out big bucks for a stroker unit or get a supercharger conversion.
I'd just stick to fitting an exhaust to release the muted V10 howl and keeping the car in good fettle by staying on top of its servicing. 507bhp is about 200bhp more than youre probably getting to use 99.9% of the time anyway so why not just try to enjoy and learn the skills needed to make the most of that.
Not putting you or your dreams down, just dont really see the point in adding power / voiding warranty / wasting loads of money when we cannot use fully whats already available.

If I were doing it from stratch, the scoops, filters and exhaust are no-brainers imo. Easy bolt-ons with no side affects (apart from an amazing sound!).
If you want to go a bit further though Id be looking at headers and secondary cat delete at this stage before you go to a tune.
Add in a decent custom tune to exploit the add ons is where it might start to get expensive in time and effort.
No difference to any other NA car such as your old VXR8 in that respect I guess? Depends how much time you have and the depth of your wallet!
M5Board is a good resource as most things have been tried and tested on the V10

Thanks for all your input.
And i have had sum very quick vxr8s most of them
have been supercharged.
Looks like just the air intake and exhaust + a tune then.
And lets see what we get, i will keep you informed.

Lots of noise is what you will gain,I'd go with an AP or similar brake upgrade instead because you can never have enough stopping power .

Eddie Eddie is right  I'm lurking! Selling the DB9 and getting myself back into an 2010 E60 M5 I would NOT do everything I did previously to get to 590bhp, just not worth money and subsquent troubles. I would advise, power pully - does not increase BHP but responsiveness. RPI scoops and block off plates, NOT the AFE filters, I had those and actually lost 2bhp over the BMC flat filters! So go BMC filters. All that for around £500, then go for the DMS custom remap, As you can see that made 568bhp. It should also be noted these minor tweeks will not cause warranty issues! That is all I plan on doing hen I pick my M5 up in a couple of weeks.  HOWEVER.... the supersrpint exhaust system is a very nie option.... it sounded awsome! Incresed bhp but also increased torque significantly. Downside I think it retails at around £8 for headers and the whole way back... downside again believe it or not the dealershipsm tried insist all my warranty claims were not valid because of the exhaust! Ridiculous but they do love to have a reason not to pay! All the other bits I did.... big brake kit, springs etc not worth it! I AM going to be sensible this time around!

I'd like a remap just to remove the limiter lol.... Sounds like £1k will see over 560bhp and removal of limiter?

Ive always haggled with the likes of DMS who are usually fairly receptive. One thing to bear in mind however is that the extra power is only realised at road speeds above about 70mph as they key to the extra power is the scoops' ram air affect. In everyday driving, it wont feel much different (which is why you need an exhaust as well for a bit of drama!)

I already have an exhaust although I have not touched the cats or manifolds... realistically having had M cars before I will be really surprised if I get 20bhp from an exhaust, air filter and remap.... I mainly want the limiter removed and some more aggresive intake roar

Can someone explain how I can get a much throatier sound from the V10 at lower revs? I saw a nice Maserati GT the other day and at crawling speed it just sounded really agressive and loud (I know it's a V8!) but it got me thinking the E61 could sound as loud with the right exhaust.
So is it the Hayward and Scott catback route for simplest option? Does it affect the warranty? Cost?
