Stick it in the local car auction if its a good runner.
You'll still be paying seller's premiums though - and if it's in at no reserve and only gets a big of a few quid, you may be disappointed when all the fees are accounted for.

One solution may be to sell it to an independent mechanic. Quite often they'll buy cars in need of fixes (head gasket etc) and either run around in them themselves or sell them on. Either way, with one foot in the motor trade they'll have connections to buy cheap parts and do all the work themselves, so what looks like a stter in need of serious repairs to you looks like a cheap runabout to a mechanic.

The head gasket went on my old Merc and I managed to sell it to my local mechanic for five times what the scrappy offered, and not far off what I'd paid for it in the first place last year.

That sounds like a really good car and ongoing project/labour of love/moneypit (delete as appropriate).

I can hear Mrs Savaloy's dulcet tones now; 'well done Oi_Oi, you've gone and bought another turd.....'! smile

My local auction allows you to put a sensible reserve on it (auctioneer has a look & puts a rough value on it) and sell with an hours inspection if there are no major faults. Ended up with about £450 in the pocket for my shabby old Focus estate, best scrap price was £180 and it just seemed a waste for a car still running nicely.

Obviously don't bother with BCA!

Do you offer good rates on a car that has already gone?

Thanks for the replies.

The car is as follows:

1994 L Reg
Lexus GS300
3.0 Straight six
MOT until October
Rocker cover gaskets replaced recently to resolve oil leak.
Lexus history until a couple of years ago when the previous owner had it SORN.
4 nearly new tyres (Yokohama, I think)
Cambelt changed at 165000 miles
current mileage 186000 ish

I think it needs the front nearside suspension bushes looking at. During our recent holiday in Cornwall I noticed a slight knock on slow, tight, bumpy corners.

The bodywork is a bit shabby with a few paint scratches and cracks in the lacquer where the bumpers have had parking bumps.

I'm the second owner - Original purchase invoice included (£35000 cash)

Electric aerial mast has been replaced with a manual pull-up one.
CD changer is sometimes unable to read CD 3 and 5 (its a 12 disc changer)

The speedo needles flicker slightly which is a known issue with these cars.

Tax expires end of July, I will need the car until August 24th so it will have 5 months tax remaining.

Possibly the factory fit stereo I've ever heard, including original sub-woofer in rear parcel shelf.
That sounds far, far too good to scrap! Really hope you sell it to someone on here - I'd have it myself if I could afford the insurance

Grrrr scrapping cars annoys me so much Today picked up a R reg vitara for £50 the guy was going to weight it in Far to good for that. plus stick it on ebay be good for a drift car or the banger boys are now starting to kill lexus's aswell!!
Can I suggest you never visit a local scrap yard near me. What you see will really make you feel sick! Some of the cars folks throw away in recent years is so very wasteful it's almost criminal. Long MoT in glove pocket with other documents and even a month or two tax disc still on their screens sometimes.
..
Do you mean MGs and Rovers ?

Nope.

I advertised it on here, ebay, gumtree, asked friends and colleagues but in the end it was scrapped frown

That's a shame. Did you advertise it at scrap price?

The thing that really annoys me, is when you see adverts saying 'I want 350 quid this week, otherwise it'll be scrapped!!!!!!!11111!' Why not just take scrap money if that is all you're going to get in the end rage

Yep. I got a price from the breakers yard and asked for that in the adverts - Hoping I wouldnt have to bother driving it there myself. The other thing was that I left for Australia on a Tuesday so needed the car until the Saturday before so asked that buyers collect it then. This may have put a few people off.
