Depends if you are a power crazed lunatic. I'm pretty sure the 997 just wouldn't work for Rich1231, GetCarter, Charlie360, 911 Habit or myself.

Interesting question. I think that my next car will be one of these 2 (the 996 Turbo would need to be second hand for my budget).

Obviously the 996 Turbo will be faster and the 4WD will be a bonus for a daily driver at least. It will drink fuel though. The 997 will look bang up to date and the interior is better. It will be much cheaper to run I'd say because of the longer service intervals and cheaper serving costs and consumables. I don't know about depreciation, but I'd say you would lose slightly more on a brand new 997 S over 3 years than on a 996 Turbo, especially if the Turbo was an early one. The fastest depreciation happens over the first 3 years, and if you spend 5-10 grand on extras, you'll not get much of it back at resale.

My plan is to drive both and decide what to do after that. The OPCs are getting the 997s in by the end of August/ early September. I'll pay them a visit then.

I can understand exactly what you are saying, the trouble with the 996TT is it's such a hard car to replace if you want a daily driver with attitude! I've had mine for coming up two years & have got itchy feet, but what to replace it with, the grunt is addictive & even the "997S" isn't likely to give the same buzz!?

If you have sold your TT already, I have to say the 997 "S" (with sports exhaust!!) looks tempting for a change & then chop it in for the 997TT when it comes out, I bet you would get a great PX package when it came to the time to upgrade. The only trouble is getting your hands on an "S" inside 6 months! It's a a lovely decision to be making, best of luck.

Grunt is one thing, but look at the lap times at the ring the 997 S seems to be a quick car.
It may well satisfy and be an improvement in the driving experience on some levels over the 996TT.

clubsport, that's fine on the track where you can keep the revs up (necessary for the 997S compared to the turbo). BHP counts more on the track than torque. On the road it's the opposite which is why the turbo would be the better road car.

Fine, but i did qualify the comment regarding possible improvement in driving experience on different levels.
I think it is hard to state that the turbo would be the better road car. For me the 996TT is an incredibly competent car, that feels a little inert unless you are going absolutely crazy at speeds in excess of 100mph.

On a positive note the dynamic ability of the 996TT is a step on from the 993TT, this bodes very well for the 997TT if you consider the abilities of the first models to arrive in the 997 range.

I don't think residuals of the standard 997 will hold up as well as the "S", but hey it's still a great car & I hear you can get the standard car quicker.

Agreed. Does sound like a cracking car though.

A mate has one of the first 'S' ones due (He always seems to get one from the first batch - git). His last Porker was a 996TT chipped to 520bhp - I'll let you know what he thinks. (And what I think when I get to drive it!)

I was at the Nurburg ring on the weekend and saw a jet black 997 Carerra S at full pelt on the public road heading in the same direction as I. Rather recklessly I overtook, also at full pelt, by the time I was approaching 100 kmh I flew past. My Conclusion was 996TT is still way ahead. It was like overtaking a M3.
