I just received my licence back after a 6 month totting up disqualification. I expected there to be a TT99 code on there and not much else, thats what I've been getting quotes for insurance based on. However, it looks like this;
SP50 6pts (for going 95 on a motorway) SP50 4pts (for going 93 on a motorway) SP30 0pts (6mth disqual) (going 83 in a 70)
What gives? I thought points should now be at zero and I'd have a disqualification code instead?
Thanks.

That looks to me that you got a 6 month ban for speeding with no points rather than a six month ban for totting up.
Did you have a solicitor for the case?

No I didn't get a lawyer for the SP30 as it was a forgone conclusion in my mind, thought I'd save the £1000 or whatever. The Judge did say in court that I would be banned under the totting up procedure.

As you say, a totting ban has the effect of 'wiping the slate clean' of existing points.
I wonder if there hasn't been a mis-communication somewhere between the Magistrates' Court and DVLA.
A couple of phone calls may be in order come Monday morning..

Yes, calls shall be made! This is weird.
I'll call the courts to work it out on Monday.
I've done another mock up for insurance and its actually a lot cheaper with these endorsements than with the TT99, but still, I don't want to be hanging on the edge with 10 points again!! The first 6 points aren't due to drop off the licence until Jan 2014!
Balls.

Surely an insurance company would want to know what the offence codes and points were, not just that you had a 6 month totting up ban. The SP30 doesn't look right though, surely it should have 3 points against it?

Yep as suspected, phoned the courts and it looks like there's been an error somewhere. sent licence int o them today. herewego said: Surely an insurance company would want to know what the offence codes and points were, not just that you had a 6 month totting up ban. The SP30 doesn't look right though, surely it should have 3 points against it? I was wondering about this - what about when entering information on the websites? Because then it would look like i've got 13 points AND a TT99? I'm probably best phoning them?

6 month ban seams insane for light speeding, especially as it would be legal under daves new plans
where you on the wrong side of the road?
as for the solicitor, worth their weight in gold, unlikely to get you off, may well get you a reduced penalty, sister got no ban for 115 thanks to her solicitor

Bloke at work got done for dangerous driving, got six points. Twelve months later got done for drunk in charge, given 10 points. Upshot was that when he got his licence back we had to tell work insurer. They noted the TT99, and asked for details of the offences resulting in the TT99. Wasn't pretty, but was better than having a Drunk Driving Conviction Ban.

That's a really nice story, but Dangerous Driving attracts a mandatory 12 month disqualification and extended retest, so unless your friend had a really great set of special reasons for being given 6 points instead, his story is most likely a crock of s te. HTH

3 SP endorsements totalling 10 points & 6 month ban should be significantly cheaper on insurance than one TT99 with no points. Looking on my system using my details (plus your endorsements). It is roughly half the price with 3 x SP's (even including the ban) than with 1 x TT99. HTH edited to correct endorsements

I'd far rather have a TT99, pay the ridiculous premium and have a nice cushion of 0pts again. I think the premiums do come down rapidly after the first year or so, from my conversations with insurers.

Curious, did you ever speak to the DVLA about this and did they send you an amended license showing one TT99 conviction instead? IANAL and have never been to court but do you not have a form from the courts stating that you were getting a totting up conviction rather than an additional SP conviction? Shirley... just keep this safe should you end up there again advising of their administrative error? Just thinking about it...

Yes i contacted the court and they asked me to send my licence back to them- I got an acknowledgement letter saying they'd received it and are sending it to DVLA for amendment. it must have been a communication error somewhere. Havent got my licence back from DVLA yet but I'll report back if there's anything silly on it. Cheers.

Points count for totting up over 3 years, rather than 2.
