Been given a new prescription for glasses today. Also advised (as the range was not great) that my prescription is too strong and risky for the online boys.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

What have the online boys said?

Glasses direct are now a fairly big company, surely it is a case of they can or they cannot.

Maybe the opticians where you had your eyes tested were just 'encouraging' you to spend more of your cash with them.

there guidelines say they can

The Optician (Tesco! - must be a franchise) say that it needs a proper Optician, and that a reputable online place would decline.

just try online with glassesdirect. The worst that can happen is that they say no...

My prescription is -2.0, bought my glasses from them no probs. Really, all you are buying is a piece of plastic formed to a shape, set into a frame. It's not like a heart pace-maker.

I have spoken with an ophthalmologist a few years ago who confirmed my thoughts around purchasing glasses online.

Contact lenses however are a bit more serious due to actual contact with eye.

First thing is:
- The combined SPH and CYL is greater than +/-8.00

I'm not sure how they sum them - your prescription is +5.75 sph, -3.75 cyl, so either they'll take that as +2 or 9.5 depending. If the latter they'll be unable to provide you glasses.

Also the CYL is right on the edge of what they can provide at -3.75.

Why would online be any different?

My optician provides my glasses. They order the lenses via internet from Portugal if I believe what they tell me, then they go to a place in Leeds to be fitted to the frames, before being sent to the local independent place.

Went online to Glasses Direct.

They rang me and wanted me to spend a spare pair to them for the PD due to my subscription.

Did that. Now have two pairs. Rather happy to be honest.

I'll use them again - now when I am in a rush though.
