Have always like these since a young boy and am always browsing the classifieds but, can somebody on here with more knowledge than me, tell me the difference between an SE and a M535i - assuming both cars are manual transmission.

For instance THIS SE and say THIS M535i.

The SE's is fitted with a LSD, sports seats and Bilsteins according to the advert so other that the visuals, (MTech aero kit and wheels)the M535i has a dogleg gearbox, having said that the SE looks to have the same rear valance as the M......... better pictures of the SE required.

Unless stated the M535i will have a standard 'H' pattern gearbox, the 'Dogleg' 'box was an option.

Though as E30M£SE says, there is actually nothing between the two cars. One has a bodykit, the other doesn't.

All 3.5 engined E28s, had slightly different suspension settings and thicker anti roll bars, ABS and an on board trip computer. They are brilliant cars and a good clean examples are getting hard to find. They do rust however, which has killed many of them. The M30 straight six sounds awesome when you give it some welly too.

I really regret selling mine, may well have to get another now...

Thought the dog'box was standard, but

The close-ratio option, also made by Getrag, features a "dogleg" shift pattern and was only offered in conjunction with the non-catalyst motor.

Cheers guys for the info.
As I say, I've always been a big fan of these (my cousin had a e12 M535i which started off the love affair) and i have wanted an M535i for years and years but, the SE in the ad above is a rather handsome car i think. Might fire off an e-mail to the seller for some more pictures - hopefully not highlighting any rotten areas.

I would have to agree with this.

I much prefer a unkitted 535i rather then the M535i plus its seems much rarer.

The first one seems to have added on a m-tech front and rear bumpers which look worse. Has nasty badges and council black grill but does look like a tidy car.

Second one is looks like a nice original M535i. That leather interior is not factory.

The black one had 16 inch wheels from an E38 7 Series, a good thing because the original Metric wheels are tyres were just lethal in thw wet. I had many a scary moment in a 528i with TRX's.
535iSE's also had the plastic arch spats. The dogleg gearbox was never a particularly nice thing to use and the standard overdrive box is better all round.
The black one looks okay but it needs a chrome grille and proper badges to replace the snide AC stzer roundels.

Yes I had noticed the badges but didn't really take them into consideration as it's an easy fix to make. As for the chrome grille - or lack of, i actually don't mind the black one paperbag but, would still get an original item to chop and change between them.
Totally agree with you though regarding the TXR's and their general behaviour. My old e24 Highline was a great looker but handling was best described as `interesting` in the wet to say the least. hehe
RE :the wheels on the black one. I thought (or rather hoped) that they are off a more modern BMW with a imperial tyre size.

Get on here http://forum.bmw5.co.uk/

Loads of knowledge on this forum. Had countless E28's,there great cars!

Incidently that silver one looks far better to me,has a nice original look to it other than the red piping which could easily be dyed back to black.

That red leather is ultra rare, shame he's put the bumper skins on it. The standard pattern sport box is much better than the dog box. Auto's blunt them. Jacking points will be in need of repair, check the rear light panel and scuttle too, as well as diff mounting. One of my old ones loved them.

I am liking the SE a bit more as well, not too keen on the Batman interior of the M535i

I think red piping is retrofit - not BMW option afaik - if it is, it is very rare.
535iSE are late run cars only on D and E reg -so that E reg is one of last (although BMW did seems to sell lots of 5s on E reg)- and yes red leather very rare (don't let seller find out!)
Pretty sure SE had more luxury than M535i

Well i've had a reply from the seller of the SE asking me to call him as e-mails are still a black art to him (they are to me too if i'm honest hehe ).
He's had the car for 8 months and 4 former keepers. I'll give him a call after my shift finishes this week and question the work carried out as stated in the ad plus the addition of the M-tec front and rear bumpers.

The 535iSE came out in early '85 along with the M535i. I went to look at one on Ebay years ago but it was as rough as buggery. I seem to recall the M535i was the same price as the SE...?

Had a double check - 535i launched few months after M535i and 535iSE launched as i stated on D reg.
M535i more expensive by £300

You'd best triple check. The BMW press cars were B535HCF and B30HRX. Launched along with the M535i in January 1985. First RHD vin numbers are 0930001 (manual) and 0940001 (auto), also Jan '85.
Price £17'950, same as the M535i.

HTH.

I have MORE than tripled checked as i have a good collection of old car mags so it is in front of me in black and white- all list M535i initially without 535i.I also have specfic mention of 518 and M535i twin launch (again NO mention of 535).Initially they may have had same prices but 2 lists i have seen show M535i more expensive between £100- £300 -(gap increasing in later cars)
I also have specfic mention of SE launched Sept 86- and this too is confirmed by Parkers in third link. Also insurance quote confirms SE as 86-87.The first 2 links again show subtle date differences between M535 and 535i

That's the info i am going on - but there are always surprising bits and pieces hidden away- i can only assume perhaps BMW belatedly delayed launch of 535i

The M535i was first based on the E12 and wsa available in 1981, if not before.
