I haven't been in to RC cars for about 20 years (since I got my first real car in fact!)

I found this locally on eBay for £35, all ready to use. it's a Tamiya 1/10 FF03 chassis, which means its FWD. It needs a little TLC, and Im sure a few upgrades in time.

I also still have a Tamiya 1/10 Lotus 99T somewhere that needs all the electrics re-fitting, I just cant remember where I left it! (it must be in my parents loft?)

I recently dragged my 20 year old + RC stuff out of the loft. First refurb has just been completed to get my little boy started: Tamiya Hornet.

As it's a refurb for bashing, not a shelf queen, there was no point in spending £30 on a shell, so a bottle of squash was required.

The little fella enjoyed his first drive and got on pretty well too.

Love the Hornet. Funnily enough, I have just been refurbing mine (26 years old) and playing with it with my 5 year old. I found it in the garage, quite muddy and dusty, charged the NiCad 1200Mah battery up and away it went. Backwards into a wall...... (5 year old driving, not me hasten to add). So....

Onto Ebay to find a new axle and was suprised to find that was available for 99p, as was a whole load of other stuff. So...got a new aerial stalk, the axle, and some of those little bag ballon jobbies for the speed controller.

Now - 3 weeks on - mod list: Stainless bearings for wheels and gearbox purchased and installed (£5.99), HPI 15 electronic speed controller (£26), new tyres - EBay - around £12 a pair (front and backs required), new springs for rear £1.99, new front bumper £4, new Carson 4200 NiMh battery (£20) - oh and a fast charger - £25, to avoid the overnight 16 hours charging for 5 minutes play.

The car now looks good again, nearly new in fact, though the shell does have some new battle scars. Thing is, this thing really flies now. It is that little bit lighter from ditching the mechanical speed controller, AA batteries and servo, plus the bearings make it free wheel really well. The speed control from the HPI ESC is miles better than mechanical and the better battery keeps it in (fast!) play. Could probably have just bought a new kit, but it is nice to have revived an original model and play with it with my boy.

I should really have taken some before photos to show the sorry state, because it was only superficial, and now looks great!

have fun!

This is my Emaxx with a brushless conversion.

This is/was an original Tamiya Topforce. (And enough NOS bits to put it back together) I also have a Rerelease Topforce built and unused.

And this, Which i recently recovered from my folks attic. boxedin

Finally got my TL-01 running this weekend, looking better with a rebuild and a new shell. Its a bit cobbled together at the moment, a few bits were borrowed from some of my other cars.

The only problem is the battery pack is no longer keeping its charge (it did two laps of a car park and then went sluggish) so a trip to the model shop is needed.

Edit... A little and large shot

Oh what a cool, interesting and different shell! Makes a nice change from all the usual stuff!

WRT batteries - I guess you're using old NiCads?

These days it's NiMh cells, or for the brave, Li-Po.

I have NiMh in my re-re Sand Scorcher - and they last a good 40 minutes. Almost long enough to start getting a bit bored? biggrin

Local model shops sell these packs for around 20 quid. You'll also need a NiMh charger - similar money.

Let us know how you get on! biggrin

I was going to get another Impreza body for it (hence the gold Speedlines), but when I saw the Civic I just had to have it. smile

The batteries that are currently in it are labeled as Sanyo 3300 NiMh's, but there at least eight years old now and six of that they've been siting in the loft.

Whats the difference between the Li-Po and NiMh cells? I might give them a try.

Oh, sounds like you already have NiMh cells - hmm, strange - they should last a lot longer than you've experienced. Maybe they're just old and knackered? As I said, my Carson pack of NiMh lasts a good 40 minutes, but they're only a year old.

LiPo cells are the (relatively) latest thing in RC. They're massively powerful with monstrous longevity after a charge - they go on for ages. BUT they require a specialist charging unit, and a degree of care when charging, being used and handled. Their huge power is also not suitable for some models not initially designed to use them - they can strip teeth and knacker gearboxes and driveshafts because of their power.

They can also spectacularly catch fire in a massive way if not handled correctly - but it's pretty rare, if you have your head screwed on.

Here's a link to a video showing what can happen

Eek! yikes

I decided to have a crack at racing again for the first time in nearly 20 years, so I spent a couple of weeks preparing this Schumacher Cougar 2 with various mods:

Didn't come last and didn't break anything, so I'm pretty happy. smile

my old Team Associated RC10B4 at Batley in about 2006/2007. Running a Novak 3.5T brushless system and a fairly tight clutch made the slippy sections hard work and on the grippy bits it would wheelie at half throttle (note the missing sticker/paint on the edge of the wing which acted as a wheelie bar)

think the pics of my 1/12th circuit cars may be long gone frown
A 3.5 on any track anywhere is uncontrollable! Especially in a 2wd !!

I have been into RC since School age, used to race 1/10 electric off road at clubs in Basingstoke, Andover and Newbury years back with Tamiya Avante/boomerang/hotshot/hotshot2/Hornet etc. etc. Haven’t driven competitively for years though,

I still very much enjoy the hobby.

1/10 scale 4WD XSTR Pro. Yes it's one of those imported jobs, yes it was on for a "good" price, yes I DID have a lot of issues with it!

Bought for £85ish from Oz, got stung for £40 tax, the ESC died almost immediately, the spur gears were made of cheese and after chewing up three of them, I got one custom made from steel, a motor broke BUT after sorting that lot out it's actually a very very quick (brushless) and tidy handling little machine.

I run it on 11.1v lipos (just bought another) and it flies, seems to be working fine and is great fun. I do constantly worry about something breaking again but it's been fine for a while now...!

Here's the steel spur (left) and the comedy one it came with:

The "guts" - now with much better motor and a fan for the ESC - another essential it didn't come with!!

So my £85 car cost me about £300++! But I do like it a lot - just wish it had been a bit simpler to own!

Anyone here know if it would make a good powered glider for a new flyer (years of Electric Helis but no fixed wing yet)?
