My wife wants to book a CNY reunion dinner for about 20 people at the Lai Po Heen in the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. I was wondering if there are any other Chinese restaurants that trump this one in terms of grandness, quality and atmosphere etc?

We tend to go to hawker stalls rather than high-end establishments, so aren’t very clued up on these things! But this time it needs to be extravagant to ‘give face’ to the rest of her family as we’ll be bringing our newborn son out for the first time smile

There are a few top notch Chinese Restaurants in KL, and the one at Mandarin is one of them. Can't remember imediately the others, but for Chinese Banquet stuff the Mandarin is probably best!

I'd go along with the Mandarin, if you want fancy and service for this occassion, but for quality of food I'd look at some of the privatly owned ones, there is a real good one in Jalan Imbi just up toward BB from the Ritz, I think its called somthing like sea world or new world, great food, but not so impressive if you want to show face to the family.
My ex was a chief and here rule was that for quality food you never went to a place in a Hotel.

Thanks Berw, I'll check out that one near the Ritz. And I know what you mean about the small places having better food - that's why I like the hawker stalls, it's not because I'm a tight arse, honest! wink

Its called the overseas, (name came back to me last night when trying not to think about it) drive down Jalan BB from the Indonesian Emb, turn left at the lights into Jalan Imbi, Ritz on your left now, over a few sets of lights at crossings and about 100/150 Metres before the turn into Jalan Raja Chulan it is on the right side.

I was taken there first time by a chinese friend, it is real chinese nit tourist place.

Thanks DeaDLocK, I'll add it to her list. But I think her mind is set on the Mandarin Oriental now...
