Volvo XC90 - Thoughts?
Discussion
18 months and 32k miles. On a '10 plate with 50k miles
Been to Scotland, France and Italy in it.
Unfailingly comfortable, half decent stereo, 7 usable seats, tow bar takes 4 mountain bikes on the bike rack 2 dogs and a mountain of stuff in the boot and 4 adults in relaxed comfort. And it averages 29 mpg wherever it goes
I would have another as the family car as long as it does not need to be my day to day car...
Great family car could not recommended it highly enough. Other than the gruff engine noise I am happy to passenger anywhere in it.
Drive it? Me? No thanks. It heaves like an elephant in labour, rolls like a jam poly with a missing bit and has acceleration measured best with a sundial and a sense of humour. It is the best family car for my wife that we have ever had.
She loves the practicality, the road presence and is a damned good driver, though I somtimes feel we are re enacting Kelly's heroes on trips through towns. I get to play Donald Sutherland
It has blown a headlight bulb and needed 4 tyres in our time.
Great practical car, but not to drive....

Just came across this thread. My 03 XC90 SE D5 AWD Auto regularly averages 40 mpg. It's been the most reliable car I've ever owned. The AWD can be tested by seeing if the prop shaft to the rear rotates by hand or not. If it rotates the splined sleeve is shot. Volvo have introduced an uprated sleeve kit many years ago. I had mine replaced as a precaution at 65,000 miles which cost about £350. The early gearboxes do tend to wear and require an overhaul at around 200,000 miles, at a cost of around £2,000. Gearbox life can be extended with regular 48,000 mile oil changes. Later models have a modified chassis with an uprated angle drive and sleeve. Also an improved gearbox. However they also have a DPF which on 2007 models canes the fuel consumption.
Absolutely no rust on my 12 year old example.
There are many early XC90's in the club with over 250,000 miles on them, and one with 328,000 miles.
My advice would be to look for one with a good service history. There are thousands on the roads and for a very good reason. A well designed, reliable and durable car but as with any car neglect can build up problems, so make sure it's got a good history.

There's something wrong with that standing quarter mile time, if indeed that's what it is. 10:45 seconds is Aventador territory (other similarly fast cars are available), and you'd be doing somewhere in the region of 130 mph.

Very good point in fact only last week Tesla launched the P90 D with "Lunacy" mode it does 0-100mph in 7 seconds and its 1/4 miles time is 10.8 literally only 4-5 road cars exist so this X3 is special indeed
It's not that the 10.45 seconds is difficult to comprehend as I don't know how the car's been modified, however it's the 76 mph terminal speed at the 1/4 mile that's the anomaly. In fact, 10.45 seconds and 76 mph is impossible I think. Looking around at the data for other vehicles, 10.5 ish seconds would need a terminal speed in the region of 130 mph, or 76 mph terminal speed needs around 18 seconds to get there.
Apart from anything else, the 0-60 time looks a bit slow to be able to attain the 1/4 in under 11 seconds. Again, based on info I've found with a bit of Googling.
However, maybe Ranger 6 will be back to enlighten us

It's possible - say he hit 180mph then just lifted and eased through at 76mph while still hitting the impressive 1/4 mile time Looking around at the data for other vehicles, 10.5 ish seconds would need a terminal speed in the region of 130 mph, or 76 mph terminal speed needs around 18 seconds to get there.

Lol - it was a quick burst on a runway the other week. We were setting up a stage and as I'd only had the car a week wondered what the 0-60 was.
I backed off at 76 so I guess the app was trying to work out the quarter mile time. I won't be back at that venue for a while so can't do the full quarter mile test. If I am at a suitable venue I will have a go
Posted for a laugh as having commented on my neighbours experience of an XC70 much earlier in the thread it had come up in 'my stuff'. Oh yes, mines standard, not mapped .......

Thanks. Yes it is - 2012 xdrive35d. It doesn't have the space or 7 seats like the Volvo but I like it
I've done a quick search and guess that a realistic quarter mile would be in the high 14s - the old x5 managed a 15.1 so I would expect from lighter weight and more power to be under that.
Fun in an SUV

Try it in the f10 . I've done a quick search and guess that a realistic quarter mile would be in the high 14s - the old x5 managed a 15.1 so I would expect from lighter weight and more power to be under that.

Also worth testing the M550d X5 ... 385bhp out of the box and 450-480remapped
