Following my renewed interest in older Porsches, I was chatting with an independent mechanic, workshop owner, restorer and specialist in 911's.

His ramshackle shop is stuffed with original 911's, SC's, 964's, 993's and 996.

OK, maybe he is prejudiced toward the old stuff, I don't know, but he was remarking on the large number of 996's that now fill his shop with engines that have gone phut.

His view that was that the air cooled stuff might leak a bit, but it generally keeps going over huge mileages. The water cooled stuff goes until it stops, and when it stops it does so in dramatic fashion.

I guess older air cooled uberbeetles have engines like motor cycles. Lots of parts connected together, and so greater likelihood of oil leaks and oozing seals. But they keep on going like an old Triumph Bonneville.

A 996 is more sophisticated, and made of single mouldings. Bad stuff happens deep within and you only get to know when it fails on you.

Fair? Who knows. But interesting to hear the perspective of a bloke with oil on his hands and a big tin of swarfega.
