It's just hertz flogging off their ex rentals isn't it?

Drive it like you rented it... only one step down from "like you stole it"

The prices are the same as anywhere else, would have expected a discount for an ex rental car but the 10 day test drive option (with all non optional fees waived on purchase) does make it an interesting offer.

Why would you expect it to be cheaper? You could always go to a dealership and buy an ex rental car under for the same price...

That's the interesting bit. Weed out the tyre kickers?

Usually ex rental cars are cheaper than the same car privately owned with dealer history, looking at the Volkswagen section at random for cheap runabouts they are asking the same as full delaer serviced with lower mileage and most likely not room to haggle as the hire cost has to be removed first.

There are plenty of websites that sell ex fleet cars which are better than ex rental and they ask a lot less than a trader does.

If you mean ex rental under a new owner then that's just like an ex minicab, you can't always trace it to it's previous life.

Why would you assume people treat rental cars any differently than their own car? Unlikely to have boy racer in a hire car I would have thought

That seems rather naive, have you never rented a car?

I've rented loads of cars and never seen the need to thrash them. Some people quite obviously do but I'd imagine the majority don't.

Same here. Used to get a rental every 5 weeks, as well as when I was in Dubai, Norway, and the US on occasion. Just drove them as I would any other.

You drive rentals like you stole them, but drive stolen cars like you own them to avoid attracting attention. wink

My Mother has a focus that was Hertz owned until 9 months old and 16000 miles. Now at 12 years old and 97k and the only thing that has broken was a plastic coolant pipe, which cost under £20 to replace (and was temp fixed by the RAC at the roadside).

It was a fair chunk cheaper than an equivalent car from anywhere else and there were several to choose from at the same price. So an excellent experience all round, although that could well have changed these days.

I'll just leave this here...

All the stories about these coming back to the depot on Monday with numbers still visible on the doors are entirely apocryphal. wink

Having worked for a large rental company a few years ago and now own my own flexible short term lease / long term rental company, my experience i some people do thrash them, most don't, just like any other car. We had a few horror stories but they were few and far between.

All the reputable rental companies, ourselves included, carry out a comprehensive check every time they are rented - oil / fluids, tyres etc. Looking at the majority of non rental cars out there, I would probably bet the rentals are better looked after than the non rentals.

Yes, as have I but presumably you'd accept that plenty of people don't. Personally, I'd be unlikely to buy an ex rental, they change renters so frequently that you'd have to assume that at least one renter has thrashed it.

My parents have had two ex-rentals, both of which they kept for a good few years before selling on. Both were very reliable - the second we have just bought off them. The first was sold to a family friend and was still going fine last I heard, apart from the minor issue of putting diesel in the petrol tank. Both were very good value and would have otherwise headed to appropriate forecourts for a substantial markup.

As with anything, buy on condition and price.

so maybe one person thrashing it for 100 miles - is that a big deal?

I thrashed the tits off my focus for over 100,000

Any used car may have had an non caring or thrashy owner, unless you believe the 'one titled owner' dribble.

At least a hire car gets the bonnet lifted once in a while.
