Over the last weekend we were at a track day in Le Mans with our Radical.

Also there was the very first customer V8 Atom, chassis #2. Thought you Atom types might like a look.

Setting terrible reliability issues aside, my word it was quick! The leads to a power pack are a clue!

I saw this one at the factory being built last time i was up there.. I much prefer the grey chassis over that horrid gold and gold wheels.. ;-)

Owners a nice guy - met him just after he collected it - he drove up to Bedford when i had my 300 there for a few laps but with a 110db static he wasn't getting out - frankly it would struggle to get out at any UK track - the guy lives in the Channel Isles and mainly tracks in France

The track days we were doing were run by a Jersey outfit. They have a great time and get all over France with a lot of nice cars.

It was pretty loud but there were no noise tests at Le Mans. It certainly wasn't the loudest there by some margin!

Howdoo! I don't normaly frequent this bit. I'm usualy over on the Caterham bit.
But I saw this post and thought Ooh! Hartley H1!
I have a bit of an interest in this engine, as I wanted to put one in my seven, exept I'm too late, as John has sold the rights for the H1 and H2 frown
But he's working on a H3 now, which is a turbo version of the H2.
So, I'll be waiting for the 2.0 liter V8 he'll be working on in the next couple of years. It should fit in with my schedule.
Anyway, to the point of my post...
I was wondering if any of you peeps would know who supplied the V8'S to Atom? Where they sourced direcly from Hartley in the U.S., or where they built by Jarod Frost of Holeshot fame?

Mmm.. it all seems a bit political.
My mate has been over there at the Atom factory this weekend to spec. his order for a 3.5/300 they seemed more interested in selling me an RST they have lying around.

To complicate things further, I live in Spain, and I heard through the grape vine that's where the technology for the H1 has gone to.
So who ever I speak to seem a bit cagey.

Anyway, I suppose it doesn't realy matter. I've missed the boat with the H1, I'll have to wait for John to build the 2.0 liter. 400hp@13,000 sounds nice! I hope it has the nice linear power delivery of the H1.
I'm looking forward to a ride in the 3.5/300 when he rocks up with it smile
Doesn't that big wing on the back upset the handling a bit though? :-/

It didn't seem to be causing him much problem at Le Mans, when it was running. Eerily quiet as I recall too.

Assuming that big cylinder behind the engine is the exhaust can, I'm not surprised it's quiet. But it's easy to forget that's a 3.0 liter engine.
They're so tiny! smile

I just thought that as the "normal" Atom has no aero, that wing might unbalance things, being as there's nothing to equal it on the front.
But I'm also sure it's been taken care of in the setup.

Still really looking forward to seeing my Mates 3.5/300 when it turns up smile

The wings are an option on the 3, I've got them front and back.

The consensus is they do pretty much nothing in terms of detectable downforce but look the mutts nuts.

Made from carbon fibre so weigh next to nothing as well.

You'll have fun in your mates car when it arrives, make sure you bring some skiing goggles or similar for the ride!

Apologies, I never noticed on the first picture it does actually have a front wing. redface
Are they adjustable though? I'd be surprised if a wing that big didn't have any affect.

There's many a 'discussion' on this over on the atom forum, both for and against.

Many concede there may be some benefit to having a front wing, but as the car is essentially the equivalent to a brick in the aero stakes (no smooth body work for air to move over) that the rear wing has no smooth air to cut through, thus no real difference to downforce.

Both front and back are adjustable, I think my rear wing has a far more intense angle of attack than the V8 above - I've never changed the settings.

Well the Atom has been over here for a while now. My pal is having a bit of fun with it at the track.
He brought it into work last week, and as a matter of interest, we put it on the crane with a load cell, to see what it weighs.
What does the factory claim for a 3.5 300?

Depends on spec - dymags are obviously a bit lighter but around 550 kg dry

No dymags. Can anyone guess what the all up weight is wink I was quite surprised.

620kg?

Please post your result as I would like to know, I doubt the "claimed" 550kg is correct for an Atom 3 300.

668 with the toolkit. I expected it to be about 100 less. I suppose the supercharger and associated stuff weighs quite a bit.

I had the same reaction!
I bet the V8 is a lighter car. The H1 is about 90kg dressed.
I wonder what the supercharged Honda unit weighs?
